Steam asking for a verification code on start up and randomly
Hi. Since yesterday's maintenance, Steam has been telling me that I am attempting to log in from a new device (which is not the case at all), and asks me for a code whenever I start up steam, or just randomly. When I look at the location information of whoever is trying to connect, the IP corresponds to mine, but not the location. This has NEVER happened to me before.

I took a look at my login history to clear the confusion, but it's the same location as I've always been logging in from (which doesn't correspond to my ACTUAL location, oddly).

I changed my password and associated email to be safe.

I have steam guard email, but not steam guard mobile if that helps. Whenever I look up this issue, I only see people who complain about steam guard mobile being the problem, and not steam guard email, so this is completely new to me.

I highly doubt anyone got into my gmail account too, I would have received a text with a confirmation code because I use 2FA with everything.

Nobody in my home uses a VPN, by the way.

Is anyone familiar with this?

Update: I have received an answer from steam support (it was a pretty fast one too), I explained the issue (also mentioned that other people are having this issue, but the agent said absolutely nothing about that, unfortunately) and they confirmed that my account hasn't been compromised, if any of you are concerned about that, turn to steam support and hopefully you'll get as swift as an answer as I did.

Apparently it is due to cookies not being enabled on your browser (which they are enabled, for me), but I use the Steam software and never my browser, so I'm still not sure what causes it.

Edit: If you use steam guard email and don't receive your code when steam asks you for it out of nowhere, close steam entirely and then open it again, you'll receive it.

Edit 2: This also prevents you from using the steam market using your browser! If you were looking for a reason, then look no further! Use the software instead.

I've been facing this issue for a month or so.

Same here. I got 2 devices where possible could login to steam - PC and iPhone. Both has Brave browser I use.
Each time I am trying to login to iPhone after PC (and vice versa) I am requested to verify login by a code sent to email. Very annoying - looks like steam doesn't cache any trusted devices/browsers at all.

But not that the worst - now I started to receive 7 days trade offers block even login in with my PC obrowser only... wtf...

I can't believe this is still a problem.

And once again, Valve Maintenance strikes back :steamfacepalm:
I logged out and in 20 times and each time the same message "Steam can't use the cookies of your browser" i also deleted one by one all Steam related cookies, relogged, re-authenticated for the 666th time with Valve authenticator, but, nothing, the message persists, this already happened dozen of times in last 2 years and they keep messing things, i wonder if there will be any hope of an exit from this nightmare :steamsad:

The solution I found for me to fix market trade linitations because of these relogins is to install Steam Authenticator. But all of these looks really weirs

i'm locked out from the market from over 1 month, using Chrome, this is a secondary account, with Steam client i use another one (my main) so i like to use this account with the browser only, if i log with this account in the Steam windows client i can use the market but is not what i want, i want to use my browser, and Steam seems to not be able to see my cookies, altough i removed all kind of protections from the browser and allowed all kind of cookies even third party ones, but nothing, i've a ticket i'm keeping open (under my request) after assistance surrended after few tries, they admitted they can't solve this issue and is in the hands of those who create these security system guard softwares, so i don't know anymore what i should do, i feel abandoned by Valve, it's a shame noone intervene to solve this issue that, i know, i'm not the only one experiencing it :steamsad:

Yeah, this is really frustrating. Can't access the market because of some stupid error where Steam claims it can't use my browser cookies, which is ludicrous since I've accepted all cookies, and I haven't cleared them in months, so there should be no reason that suddenly the market doesn't like them. All I want to do is get some trading cards, and even though I can list items and people can buy from me, I can't buy from anyone else. There's no excuse for Steam not fixing an ongoing problem that so many people are having.

I also have the same issue with the windows client. Just started yesterday. I have never seen this problem before. Tried resetting passwords and deauthorizing all devices to "clear" anything out. Restarted PC after entering and selecting remember device. Still having the same issue.

Really annoying since I am running a game server from this PC.

Same here. Steam asks me to enter the code every time the client is connected. Steam sends the code to the mail. But entering it every time when you start the client is... inconvenient.

Update: Was wrong... not every time... May be only after reconnection internet (but anyway - not nice).

I am having the same issue both on Steam app and on the browser since last steam maintenance. I receive correctly the code, but it is quite annoying having to check the mail for the code every time I access steam!
I have tried in 3 different computers where the login was working without issues just a few weeks ago , and the issue appear on all of them.

I'm having this issue now. After the recent updates, Steam has been sending verification code to my email every time I login from the same computer. It's not that serious but quite inconvenient still as this wasn't the case before. Even if I tick the "remember me" box, it still doesn't save my login info and behaves as if I'm just logging in to a new device every time. I already deleted the htmlcache folder as this was one of the solutions I saw to no avail. I just turned off my steam guard for it to not send any code to my email every time.

It started mid april that steam allowed to add multiple accounts. only problem: out of three accounts I added, only one was randomly persisted - the one I use least *sigh*
Trying to change that does not work, I need to use the "new account"-plus each and every time now, forcing me to re-authenticate my steam guard many times a day, which is a productivity and fun killer and I am starting to hate steam.
