Steam asking for a verification code on start up and randomly
Hi. Since yesterday's maintenance, Steam has been telling me that I am attempting to log in from a new device (which is not the case at all), and asks me for a code whenever I start up steam, or just randomly. When I look at the location information of whoever is trying to connect, the IP corresponds to mine, but not the location. This has NEVER happened to me before.

I took a look at my login history to clear the confusion, but it's the same location as I've always been logging in from (which doesn't correspond to my ACTUAL location, oddly).

I changed my password and associated email to be safe.

I have steam guard email, but not steam guard mobile if that helps. Whenever I look up this issue, I only see people who complain about steam guard mobile being the problem, and not steam guard email, so this is completely new to me.

I highly doubt anyone got into my gmail account too, I would have received a text with a confirmation code because I use 2FA with everything.

Nobody in my home uses a VPN, by the way.

Is anyone familiar with this?

Update: I have received an answer from steam support (it was a pretty fast one too), I explained the issue (also mentioned that other people are having this issue, but the agent said absolutely nothing about that, unfortunately) and they confirmed that my account hasn't been compromised, if any of you are concerned about that, turn to steam support and hopefully you'll get as swift as an answer as I did.

Apparently it is due to cookies not being enabled on your browser (which they are enabled, for me), but I use the Steam software and never my browser, so I'm still not sure what causes it.

Edit: If you use steam guard email and don't receive your code when steam asks you for it out of nowhere, close steam entirely and then open it again, you'll receive it.

Edit 2: This also prevents you from using the steam market using your browser! If you were looking for a reason, then look no further! Use the software instead.

I did, yes. I didn't want to bother people because I thought it was a trivial steam bug.

Do you have the save login info checked?

I have the same issue but it only happens with my windows client, glad to see I'm not alone in this. Let's hope for a speedy fix

Hi there. before yesterday's usual maintenance I logged in through chrome browser to check my other account since we can no longer see ''last time'' feed without logging in...anyhow just by now as usual I went to log in through chrome browser and Valve guard requested me to send a code but never have deleted none of my cache or cookies so what is going on?

I also have the same issue with the windows client. Just started yesterday. I have never seen this problem before. Tried resetting passwords and deauthorizing all devices to "clear" anything out. Restarted PC after entering and selecting remember device. Still having the same issue.

Really annoying since I am running a game server from this PC.

I have the exact same issue both on browser and Steam client since yesterday maintenance. I opened a ticket with Steam support, but so far I've only been given general info about browser cookies etc. but maybe they can help. I'm sure there is no issue from my side and I didn't change anything on my system either. Each login it triggers steam guard and sends an email and asks for the code.

I'll let you know if I get it fixed somehow via help from steam support. But glad to see that it's not just me who has this problem.

Have the same issue since yesterday too, happens both with Chrome and Explorer...
Steam support has been useless so far.

Same issue with steam client. Been using Steam Guard since 2015 and never had this problem before. It boots me randomly without sending the code it asks for until I close and relog. Done it too many times now and it always shows same IP and computer name, once it had a different location but other info same.

I'll live with it for now, hopefully all of you can do the same without getting too fed up, sorry for not being able to help at all.

This is a 100% issue from Steam not the client, I tried multiple computers with two different accounts, all cookies enabled and no browser extensions, the problem persists.

Just had it happen to me again, it was pretty scary because steam would not send me the code unless I closed steam entirely. If you don't receive your code when steam asks you for it out of nowhere, close steam entirely and then open it again, you'll receive it.

This is also what I saw when I looked up the issue, people saying it happens on all devices with the same account. Didn't think of that, I thought it only applied to steam guard mobile.

It is undoubtebly from Steam I believe, since it started happening after yesterday's maintenance.
