Steam refuses to download games fast.

I have a good internet service, in most game launcher my download speed closes in on 20mb/s , but for some ungodly reason steam refuses to use even a tenth of that available internet unless i clear the download cache multiple times, and that's if im lucky, uusually it just takes a long time to download stuff when it really shouldn't.

If your internet works fine everywhere but Steam, then it’s safe to assume your ISP is throttling connections to Steam or their CDN.

Download issues are primarily you being disk IO or CPU limited

Steam can obliterate gig connections if the host computer can do it

You might need to check your internet plan.
If it is still active you might need to check your speed first in speedtest.com
Else you can check this guide in youtube , it's like choosing different server.

Get a spare pc or friends router to test your end connection and you know has a working speed at hes connection, i did nt say this solve all, but should be seen as Process of Elimination.

your pc your router , your ISP or its partner or steam in other end.

Do not have own harddisk issue that work at 100% then its you that reduce speed, and you cant hide for me with no tsorage on disk to cable failur to whatever going on at own pc thats still yuor problem, so Driver and software and hardware issue still you.

welcome to a network engineer that always find someone that has a issue.
its so rare it 2 of them like you and ISP on same time, lets stayout of that rare combinations.

and get this fast, im not here to blaim you or isp or steam, i focus on the network issue nd try see it from that point as most network engineer do. who has bug /mistake or dont know is same thingy.

as the other point out do you get what you paid for into own ISP.
this dont ruleout alot of other things.

and its a one time clear Download cache , rest just show either you have iSP issue or own pc

"20mb/s" use steam bits per sec , so you dont make mistake with it.

and admit own mistake is first step if you know it, think of all the other that read and try fix it.
the helper here can say something , but most just say okay yeah and walk away or leave topic.

see task manager do my harddisk work at 100% then thats why DL is reduce and thats your problem. and i dont care if your anti virus app doing it or filled disk and other issue with I/O on a disk or the way, your build on that pc.

if you are not a experts in how pc works say so. and with network in top of this , many get it wrong most help here know this.

just so you get it ppl with 1GB lines today many of us now, we have no issue into steam though all of the ISP. ( so chance of own pc can be a issue is even higher today. its not a 100mbit issue anymore or 10mbbit card , so you see there is nothing new about it its same BS all over again on bigger lines.)

Same thing happens to me, and the *only* solution was to download stuff through a VPN. My ISP claims they're not throttling steam, but they're probably lying. There's literally no other explanation for it.

The issue is, the speed starts off fast, what it should be, but over a period of a few minutes, it gradually keeps going down in speed, until it bottoms out at like 1/10th of my bandwidth, and stays there. Use the VPN, it downloads at full speed always.

cant say they are lying but , bad explanations if that route is overcrowded or traffic has been change while other area get fixed.

and why you can see many post from me say ISP can be the problem.

and why Change Downloadzone might work , but that will not work if its own ISP at first jump that has a issue. so its complicated as hell and why it work for some but not others.

but i can tell you this VPN is not a Solution at all, you just made more jumps then standard because traffic has to goto other network on other side that can only lead to more Jumps.

but i bet many forget VPN can have higher services then standard traffic, and its here people make mistakes and think its better. ( so you can say ISP VPN or bandwide and earn extra cash on the line with VPN is part of the problem )

ask any independed Network technician, or should i say , i will never trust anyone from anywhere who said any diffrence on the subject.

same as asking robber to guard bank. ( i maybe be hard on the subject, but then you are caught in the middle of two companys blaim each other for network issue then you learn see things from network point of view, and you actual end up with hard words and slam other on its places, you have no choise in the matter. that day you take any side you lost all.

and i get yout point "The Legend" but sametime what does that tell you something aient right here then you need VPN to get max DL Speed, that is know as congestion network and this is not a attack or defending on your ISP, its the ugly truth and get a spare pc to confirm it. and take it to your isp , and tell them you cant seem to deliver transfer rate end of story.

and again why maybe steam never can help you, in what own isp and its partner is doing.

you can find several post with ISP throttle the speed, either live with it or change ISP if you can or complain over it, keep in mind have other network possibility before complain, you cant live on a moutain and think i have many choise's in that area. so things is not always just about speed its also about network possibilities.

Also having the same issue since late last night (UK time). Tried all general fixes so gonna try the beta now and see if that does anything. As im on unlimited UFO broadband, I'd be surprised if the provider was the issue here.

Edit: Nope. Download started at near full speed and dropped to about 3Mbps within a few seconds.
