Removing Steam Overlay With Remote Play

Hey everyone. Not sure how to best explain the issue I'm having, but I'll give it a shot.

So I've been trying to play a game (Project Zomboid) with my fiance over "Remote Play Together." To do this, the game forces one of us to use a controller when we play, which is fine. We each have a hard wired Xbox One controller so either of us can plug in one while the other uses the keyboard. So the game itself runs fine.

The problem I run into is a good portion of the important controls for interacting with the game world are mapped to the back button (the double box / double square looking button) on the Xbox One controller. The game makes you hold this button to bring up an interaction wheel, that you have to navigate through for sometimes 10+ seconds to find what you're looking for.

When remote playing together, which is the only way to play multiplayer in the current build version of the game, holding this button for 2 to 3 seconds brings up the streaming / remote playing overlay. I've read that there's a setting somewhere in something called Steam Link that I can change to edit or remove this mapping, but I don't have Steam Link. I don't use Steam Link. Moreover, I can't even download Steam Link to begin with on PC. It doesn't give me the option to for whatever reason in the Steam Store.

So what I'd like to know is this... How do I remove the god awful overlay from Remote Play without using Steam Link? The whole reason we got the Project Zomboid multi-pack was to play the most recent build together, so if we can't get remote play to be playable with the controller the entire purchase would be a waste. Any insight would be amazing.

You are streaming the game, so whether you have a Steam link or not, doesn't matter. Fact is, you are streaming the game! You can see if you can configure the streaming overlay. Pretty much all button presses on Steam are configurable, I see no reason for why this should be an exception. I suggest you open that streaming overlay and go from there.

There weren't any options in the menu for toggling the overlay for the overlay in streaming, unlike with regular gaming. I can disable the regular overlay, but for whatever reason it doesn't disable it when using Remote Play.

I kinda was going to open a remote play session to check things out for myself (I am generally horrible at memorizing things, I'm way better at looking what's in front of me), but after you told me off in a rather harsh way, my motivation dropped to zero.

Since there never was an answer here, and this came up in search results for me. I might as well offer my assistance.
Open the main steam menu, in the top left where it says "Steam", go to settings, and then remote play. At the bottom is an option called "Advanced Client Settings" where you can change the default key to any other key that'll be better suited for gaming.

Apologies for the people being useless here, it took me half a second to find out without even opening a remote play session myself. (Although I do use remote play and have a separate issue altogether.

(Namely, I shift tabbed and I can't get the steam overlay off despite shift tabbing again. Which makes the game utterly unplayable, and as I can't physically interact with the desktop, I can't remove it from the source.)

Yes - no one here is useful or misunderstands what is happening. It is happening to me also and I cannot find a fix for it.. I know - more words.

Hi!

I had the same problem and I fixed it.

It's not from steam, it's from ASUS Tweak. If you go to the ASUS Tweak tool, there's 2 windows. In the narrower one, if you click on the gear up there's an "OSD" button and you can disable the performance overlay and the image thing on top as well.

You have to do this on the host computer (not the client).

I don't understand what possesed them to set this stuff as enabled by defautl, it's a horrible UI thing to do.
