Birthday discount code...
Recently I got a discount code from Square Enix to use on my next purchase. I planned on using it to pre purchase Endwalker Collectors Edition. I can use it on the Square Enix website but as you know if you purchased the game from steam you have to purchase the expansions from steam.

Is there a way to be able to use the discount on steam, or am I ♥♥♥♥ out of luck?

Thanks in advance.

Those type of codes are usually store-specific. Simply because the code is designed to be recognized by the store it was issued from.

So, in short, you're SOL.

Thank you for the response. Guess I'm going to have to rethink purchasing future games from Steam.

If I purchase a game through steam and the company who made the game gives someone a discount, you should be able to use said discount no matter what the platform in my opinion. So in short, unless there is a substantial discount on the initial purchase I will be buying from the games originating source from now on...

Go to the thrift store at your place and tell them the coupon should apply for that DVD they've got.
There's reasons why discount coupons don't apply everywhere.

Your logic is flawed. The discount code you received is only good for purchases at Square Enix. It doesn't matter that they also sell their games on other platforms. Steam cannot provide a discount for a code that they are not in control of. If you prefer to get your Square Enix game on Steam at the same discounted price that your discount code will provide elsewhere, you need to make Square Enix aware of that. Get Square Enix to provide Steam with the information Steam would need to provide you that same discount.

Why would Square Enix give you a discount code and then let you use it on Steam? They want you to use it on their store front. You can't take that code to any gaming platform and expect to buy something with it. You also can't go to a brick-and-mortar retailer and say "Hey, I have a code from Square Enix for their website but I want to buy the DLC here. Gimme". You'll be laughed out of the store. The reverse is also true: you couldn't use a Steam code or discount / coupon on Square Enix's site.

If you want publishers, devs and gaming platforms such as Steam, GOG and Epic to let each other redeem each other's coupons, then lobby them to come to an agreement on this (which means working out profit sharing etc.). Personally, I don't see it happening though.

It is kind of a crap move though... "you bought this game on Steam... it's your birthday so let us reward you with something that only works if you rebuy the game directly from us!" They could offer ways around it. Iirc the devs of IL2 did something similar, but you could register your game on their official site and buy the dlcs directly from them without having to repurchase the original game.

Blame Square Enix. This isn't the first time they've not thought something through and it wouldn't surprise me if they do it as bait just to get you to buy something regardless after a worthless automated gesture.

Which I assume is exactly what Square Enix intended by giving you a code that you can only use on their store - so good for them, give the folks in the marketing department a bonus :mhwgood:

Well, they could have given you some Steam goodie, but they haven't. Square want you to quit Steam for their own store, and providing a coupon working on that store is an incentive. It's a ♥♥♥♥ move, sure, but since when do companies shy away from ♥♥♥♥ moves?

Very true lol. I feel like SE have proven how out of touch they are multiple times in the last few years starting with their dumping of the Hitman franchise (which thankfully IO was able to continue without them).

Yeah, it is a weird thing for SE to do - they know you can't use it to buy DLC for a game you already own on Steam, so you would have to buy it again. Although I am guessing the whole thing is automated, and doesn't take into account where you made the original purpose which sounds sort of half-arsed on the part of SE.

It's not really on Steam though, or any gaming platform: no one is going to let you use a discount on their storefront that came from another store. SE needs to give a bit of thought to their birthday gifts. They're like that partner/wife/husband who gives you a gift that is really a gift to themselves.

But it isn't a discount code for DLC, it's just a discount code, it could be used for anything,

Because it has nothing to do with them being nice or liking you, it isn't really a gift, it's a marketing strategy to try and get you to use their store.

100%

Unfortunately anyone with half a brain would throw the middle finger to them after trying that. I've seen many "Birthday gift" coupons before. I seem to remember EA and/or Ubi doing it in the early days of Origin/uplay but it was a $10 off a purchase sort of thing(not sure if it's still a thing). That might actually get someone who was on the fence with a purchase to commit... a discount on a dlc that makes you repurchase a game you already bought is a slap in the face.

Of course. Every company works this way pretty much. This is why I tend to ignore coupons, vouchers or discount codes unless it is for something that I already want, available on the store front I prefer, and at a price I am willing to pay.

Thanks for all the input.

I decided to just buy a few things from SE from their site to enhance my game play and also use the discount code. Even though what I'm buying is just aesthetics for in game use guess what happened? When I went to purchase the items there were no optional boxes to input the code. Then since I had originally purchased the game from Steam it forwarded me to Steam to finish the purchases. Just can't win.... ♥♥♥♥♥♥ business lol.
