How do you turn emoticons/backgrounds into gems?

Hello!

For a while now im earning this currency called steam points instead of gems, and these points seemed to be absolutely useless, zero worth currency, until i learned from the wiki that you can buy sh!tty backgrounds and emoticons, and turn them into gems. So i bought a 100 point emoticon but i dont see an option for converting it.

Can someone please tell me how does this work ?
I would like to have gems from these points.

You can't turn stuff from the points shop into gems.

the only way you are getting gems for points is thru trading. and that kind of trading is not supported. either party scams the other, support will not assist nor restore scammed items nor points.

So how do you get gems to create booster packs now? Besides turning cards or using $$ cause those two options would obviously defeat the purpose

you just listed the ways you get gems. the process hasn't changed

Wait, so, you were able to use your own pictures for background and stuff, and gained gems for purchases, but now you are forced to use steam point stuff (cant upload your own) and if you dont find them worthwhile you gotta basically load $$ into the gems too now? Steam points the only 'reward' for purchasing games on steam or you oughta get gems sometimes too ?

Gems are a currency introduced on Steam on December 12, 2014, during the Holiday Sale 2014 event. Gems can be obtained by "recycling" trading cards, emoticons, and profile backgrounds that you own. Doing so destroys the card, emoticon or background, and gives a certain number of gems depending on the item.

they never gave gems for purchases, you could never use your own pictures for backgrounds, all backgrounds are created by valve or a game developer.

the steam wiki is correct, you can convert backgrounds and emotes into gems. items bought with points do not convert to gems

You know thats not true, you could use screenshots from games you took with f11, as i did so, until this steam point shop thing. I had my own background from saints row 3. Also i had 1600 gems sitting in my inventory before the steam points

are you using the default client or a steam skin or mod for the steam client? the default client does not use screenshots for profile backgrounds.

It does not, but it used to, like really long ago.
