Discord Account Scam (convincing Photoshop)
Hello there,

Note: In my Reddit post you can also see the pictures and the video of the scammers: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamScams/comments/o8sthx/discord_account_scam_convincing_photoshop/

I know that this method is already known but I wanted to refresh this and bring it back to everyone’s mind. Since i nearly fell for it and I want to prevent someone else felling for that. Also they used really well made Photoshop. (Pictures below)

Note:

I put some screenshots of the conversations

Yesterday I watched a movie and left discord open so a friend could contact me if he wants to play anything.

I then got a message from an unknown person, saying that he got scammed in my Name.

This was his story:

He got 500$ worth of CSGO skins scammed by someone saying, that my Steam account is his main account. And since my account looks legit he fell for that.

Long story short, after a little of a conversation he told me that he and his friends made a huge mistake by reporting my account. He sent me a picture of the steam report, a Steam account of a Steam admin and “his Discord Account”.

In that moment I believed the entire story and I was really afraid.

I then added the “Steam admin” on Discord and within seconds he accepted my friend request. That was the first time I got just a little skeptical but nothing more.

After a little conversation of what happened and what I should do now the conversation got really awkward.

I should start by sending him a screenshot of my Steam purchase history. So that he can verify if my Steam account looks legit.

After that I should log out of my account on PC but open my Steam app on my mobile. So that he can “connect my account to the Steam database”.

At that point I really trusted him and felt in good hands.

Now there was “only one step left”. He told me that he needs to convert my CSGO skins into TF2 keys to go around the 7 day trade ban. And since this is really complex he wanted to do this for me.

Now I got really skeptical and finally started to use my brain again. I wanted him to send me prove that he is really the guy on the Steam profile. Or in other words, that he is really a Steam admin. So I send a friend request to the Steam admins profile and wanted him to accept me.

This was the point where the entire story turned around.

He didn’t answer me for about 10 minutes, what was really unusual since he always answered immediately. He then told me that he is not allowed to accept my friend request for protective purpose and sent me some really well made Photoshop pictures to prove it.

There was only one HUGE Mistake:

In the picture where he showed me that he got my friend request you can see that he has only 41 Steam friends but Steam profile of the Admin had over 200.

He answered this with “that he only put 41 friends on his profile”.

Note: The “Steam admin” already wasted around 1 ½ hours for me and of that a ¾ hour I wanted him to prove his identity.

He now got really hurried and wanted this to finish.

So I asked him what he needs from me to finish the process.

He told me that he needs my Account name and password.

Now I heard enough.

I told him to wait since I have to finish something real quick (I just wanted to waste some more of his time and also I wrote to the Steam support)

So after some messages from him and roughly 2 ½ hours he defriended and blocked me.

At the beginning I really fell for that and trusted this random guy. But after starting to use my brain again I realized that this person could be anyone and thanks god I wanted him to prove his identity. But the Photoshop work they put into this was nearly flawless and perfect. Especially the video. But a Steam admin would NEVER EVER ask for your password.

I hope I can prevent that some of you gets scammed with this method.

If you have any questions to this, feel free to contact me.

Have a great day!

Long story short, have people read this instead:

Short, concise, to the point and the official statement from Valve on this matter.

Yes, thanks for the addition.
I just wanted to tell my story of how this happened and the more people this know, the less can get scammed

TL;DR: There's nothing convincing about a random person bullshitting on a different service and referring you to another random person on that service claiming to be support.

People tend to go full TL;DR. They don't care for your origin story and don't want to read a novel.
Not that PSAs work anyway.

See for yourself how many of those threads we had this month alone, let alone the last few months or years.

- There are no Steam Admins
- Steam Staff do not use Discord
- Steam Support do not send screenshots
- Steam Support do not send videos

This is an incredibly old and common scam with well over 1000 active threads (not including deleted or merged) No matter how dressed up the scam is, things like this should be obvious.

Report it at Discord support, its a discord issue there.
