Steam Chat Window and Friend List sometimes going black for a few seconds.

So when I have my friends list and chat box minimized and then proceed to click on it, the boxes sometimes remain fully black for a few seconds. Not sure if anyone else has this issue. Ive tried clearing the webcache on steam, reinstalling steam, updating my nvidia drivers, turning GPU acceleration on/off. Nothing has helped. Not sure what else to try. I don't know if its steam or my computer at this point. Anyone else have this?

what i did is acctualy uninstal my steam without knowing it will uninstal ALL my game


and it didnt work

RIP to you buddy. It baffles me how this issue doesn't get more attention. Sometimes it's so bad that it actually never recovers from black and I have to close the chat window entirely just to get it to render again.

Lol and thanks for confirming, another brand new LAPTOP (which can't be overclocked) having the same issue right out of the box. But yeah it's totally our faults, it's our PCs and configs that's the problem, not just another stupid Chromium render bug that Valve and Google refuse to fix. What a disaster. Give me back old school Win32 native apps, I hate this Chromium web browser based EVERYTHING that all apps are using today. Garbage easy code for lazy developers.

Yeah So far Ive found posts that go back to 2018, so obviously Valve is just shrugging this one off.I gotta reopen my friends list a dozen times every night just to use the chat with my friends to hook up for games. It just seems like such a stupid little thing that mildly irritates you for YEARS until the irritaation is no longer mild... every time it happens now it's pissing me off more and more, because its like no one gives a $#% lol.

Please please fix it.... Its bad enough we gotta dig through thirty thousand titles of hentai shovel-ware trying to find the handful of good indy games that MIGHT be buried under them for a sale, but ignoring a chat bug like this seems ridiculous for so long. Ive never seen one response to any of these with a real answer.

Bought a brand new Asus gaming laptop with a Ryzen 5900HX and RTX 3070. I have the same issue with the friends list appearing black after minimizing and maximizing the window...

Dont count on it, who said this is not a ISP and there partners network into steam that cause this, if all had this issue then you will see 100.000 complain over it, steam has 22milioon active user per hour online that apox 100+ million every day.

And many forget traffic into steam ( or route is a isp issue ) if you dont get 1000 of post reply within a hour, then it dont look like a steam problem ) try reboot , maybe that will fix you pc issue , that also can lead to this.

I and other are not here to defend steam, or ISP, or poster, its simple other things can do this, and it dont help then server have number glicth and other issue.

As someone who has been on steam since it's creation, I find this logic a little strange. Now, it's a very minor problem to be fair and it doesn't really prohibit use of any features, so it's possible the issue is under reported. As you can see from this thread though, it has occurred for many years for users with many types of computers (2 computer for me, same problem,) with all types of internet connections, etc. It hasn't been addressed nor acknowledged for years. We all love steam man, but honestly, after about 20 years of spending more money then I care to admit on this platform, maybe it should get looked into? Am I or the other users on this thread asking too much? No way.

Hey man. Try this:

1. Open a chat window with anyone
2.Make sure this chat window is the only Steam window open
3. Move the mouse over the taskbar icon for the chat window
4. Rapidly click the icon to minimize and restore the chat window
5. I dare you to tell me it doesn't turn black at some point

I've reproduced this issue on literally every PC I've tested ranging from desktops to laptops, Nvidia to AMD, Intel to AMD, every driver I can throw at it, different system themes and UI tweaks, literally nothing prevents it from happening. The only control element here is Steam. Maybe the masses aren't complaining about it because they simply don't notice it or aren't bugged enough by it to speak up? Maybe most people don't even minimize their chat windows to see this issue in the first place? There have been countless times where there were objectively reproducible bugs with various components and drivers that only a few people spoke up about but they affected everyone. Just because there's not many of us talking about this here, doesn't mean it isn't happening to everyone and isn't worth investigating.

Yeah. This works for me. I get it alot cause I do this all the time, I just never realised what exactly was triggering it and then i have to close my friends list and reopen it every time. It had never done it before the major chat changes years back. I figured originally no big deal. it was still experimental that one day it would just stop but it never did. And Ive seen posts that went on for years about it. I mean its not a big deal or anything really but considering the improvements theyre making all over the app all this time youd think this would at least be on the list or something. Its just this little agitating thing that happens every day at some point.... forever. lol

I just did it, i cant reproduce the error.
even did it witha offline friend and a online, same thing cant reproduce the error.

other things that can help is clear webcache and cookie.

do not have added any steam cmd to steam.exe, other have done that and give steam new issue with patch and such, but you have 2 pc and did it with other pc as you say.

i actual think i did see that along time ago , then steam collaps window into own title bar as minimum view and it was impossible to click on it, i did not think of it , i double click on the title to max it , old windows pro tips, smae as space bar to max it.

and yet it dont sounds like that issue, again it was a long time ago, black windows was there , and other mention position was a issue back then.

thats all i recall from chat windows that some how gave Black chat windows.
and yet i dont know what cause this.
and it was many years ago, to many steam patch ago.

I feel like they might have actually fixed this. I just tried reproducing it using the usual method of opening a chat window, making sure it's the only open Steam window, and then rapidly clicking the taskbar icon to minimize/expose the chat window and it never came up black. The weird thing is, I am positive I just saw the Steam library UI full black same as the chat window used to be, only yesterday. The odds of them fixing it out of the blue seems unlikely to me so I'm guessing it's just a fluke.

Again that why i dare you to confirm reproduce it, not because i say so, but as valid proof you can, so steam support can test this or find the cause what the hell happend here, and maybe steam will not tell you where fault is , with isp and there partner back to you but whatever it was, seem fixed atm according to you.

and you should pay attension to when i say where are the 100.000 of complain with steam 22million per hour apox online, they can be seen as proof they dont seem to have a issue.

point is if this was a steam issue alone, im not so sure, simple to few steam user here that complain over it.


next time try keep a eye on steam event sale sametime , to see if network area with heavy loads is part of this. ( thats a isp issue into steam server )
