Steam defaults to offline on login

I'm appearing as offline by default since (I don't know). Haven't played with friends for some time and noticed a few days ago that I appear offline when I log in.
There's no problem at all setting me ass online again. But it allways defaults back to offline whenever I log in.

I have tried clearing Steam download cache and reseting winsock in Windows as a article suggests.

I am using a vpn from time to time and I've had Steam on while using the vpn a few times. Got kicked out by Steam and it instashutdown Skyrim aswell when I turned on the vpn once a while back. Had to reenter my password.
Can this be the cause for why Steam is acting up with the friendslist?

Steam has a strict no VPN policy. Only thing you can do is click online then wait for it to changed.

Make sure your PC is connected to internet.
