Slow steam download speeds

So I've tried everything and cannot pinpoint the issue. My pc is capable of gigabit internet speed and yet steam will download at no faster than 5.3MB/s at an average of 4.4MB/s. My ISP is giving me 50-70 MB speed, my cpu and SSD isn't overworked during downloads, the pc is hardwired straight into the router which is a BT smarthub less than 6 months old. The speed at the line into the pc has been tested and matches what I'm getting from my ISP. I've tried clearing steam download caches, changing regions and all that. I am at a loss, please help!

Are you alone on that HUB, network engineer wont accept any hub today, well as emergency solution, rest is seen as shoot yourself in the foot.

Maybe its a bad english work for something, but switch and hub is not same thing.

if you can test with a directly connect wallplug maybe that can confirm it or its not the issue.


get a spare pc or Friends laptop to confirm same test you have , so it a good idea you know it work as hes connection.

Steam defaults to displaying speeds in BTYES so MegaBytes, MB, ISP and Speedtest sites show speeds in bits, so megabits, mb. Uppercase B for Bytes and lowercase b for bits. It's 8 bits per Byte.

While you're not getting max speed, 5.3MB/s is around 42mb/s it's not as slow as you think. To make it less confusing change Steam to display in bits so it matches the same units speedtests sites and you ISP use.

Steam > Settings > tick the Display in bits per second checkbox at the bottom > Ok

Keep in mind other networked devices will use some of your network bandwidth. If you or someone else has a phone, tablet, laptop.....even a Smart TV they could be downloading updates and stuff while you are trying to download games and that'll prevent you getting max speeds

Ok, thought I'd get the basics out the way early jest in case... surprising how often that is the case. Could try changing download region....

There is only 2 to choose from in the UK, tried both, makes no difference

Try these fixes

1. Clear your download cache

2. Change the download server location

3. Temporarily disable your firewal

4. End the resource-hogging programs

5. Update your network driver

6. Check your network connection status

7. Reinstall Steam

Why limit yourself to servers only in the UK when you have others the world over?

Thankyou for all the suggestions people. Unfortunately its just re-treading old ground. I've tried all these methods, over and over for months with no success. If anyone comes up with anything different, I will give it a try

Suppose it could be an ISP issue. May sound odd but try using a VPN. Plenty of free trials available. Could try free VPN to test too but be sure they don't cap speeds or it's kinda pointless try one. If it does improve contact your ISP as it's likely something their end.

what ISP do you have that is able to give 50-70 Giga bit internet?
Are you sure you are getting 625-875MegaByte download speed?
