2K resolution, but only with 30 FPS
Yesterday I tried to run some games in 2K resolution (2560x1440) and they all look great, BUT somehow I only get 30fps in all games, also non-steam ones, even though they were running with 60fps before.
What could be the cause of this? My graphics card (GTX 1080 8GB), maybe my monitor (used my 4K TV)?
And I didn't even try the newest or demanding games, more like older games like Left 4 Dead 1+2 or GTA Vice City and San Andreas.
Anyone has ideas on how to fix this?

EDIT: I found a solution, BUT it's only half-satisfying. I have to turn OFF v-sync in all games and lock the max framerate to 60 in my nvidia settings.

But there MUST be a way to play in 2K AND have 60FPS with v-sync ON, hell, some people even play in 4K and have 60fps.

Using a television is not the same in any way as a monitor, so yeah that was probably why.

Okay, I just bought a new monitor with 2K resolution, maybe this will work. I also thought I couldn't possibly be my GTX 1080, it's not the best anymore, but should be able to handle older games in 2K.

Every single system is different, so be aware that you cranking up the money or the settings won't change some games not running that resolution / quality.

Using a something to something else adapter?

This might help a lot to pinpoint your issue, please answer these questions.

What the display model having trouble?

What are you using HDMI, DVI, or Display port?

Did you check if the display cable not the issue?

Did you do a video driver update recently when the issue occur?

Ensure not using something that trying to press it own vsync, or messing with the game own vsync.

Did you mess with Nvidia control panel for handing vsync, or DSR?

Disconnect TV so system not seeing it, try rebooting after disconnect TV, and test out games with vsync was there any changes? Before doing this if you have lot of items on your desktop, take a screenshot so you can help yourself reorganize them for later.

1. I used my 4K TV
2. HDMI
3. How could the cable be the issue? It is intact, if that is what you're asking
4. Video driver updated yesterday
5. How should I know if something is messing with the v-sync? Where to look? Nvidia settings?
6. No, I only set the max framerate to 60 to disable v-sync and have a stable framerate!
7. So just pull the HDMI cable or what?

I already bought a new 2K monitor, should arrive today. What else should I do? Do I have to buy a new graphics card as well?

This is something that often gets overlooked: cables are REALLY finicky. Sometimes all you have to do is *switch which end is going into what part*.

And suddenly "it just works". It's very weird, but it is a known thing that does sometimes help!

Thanks, I will try it later!

all devices and the cable have to support higher resolution at @60 hz. if you only get 30 fps at 1440p with vsync its because its running the display at 1440p@30 hz.

your gpu is definitely capable of 2160p@60 hz but your cable has to be at least a 'high-speed' hdmi cable. older 'standard' hdmi cable will only support 1080p@60 hz (they usually arent sold anymore).

this may also be your tv if it is an older model it might only support @30 hz or you have to check your tv hdmi settings if there is any option to enable 1440p/2160p@60 hz.
eventually its just that (one) port on your tv. might check if others work

Some TVs will limit display to 30 or 24 Hz for certain inputs (for example for a blu-ray player). Sometimes the TV may actually have a game mode setting which you have to turn on in the TV menu and use a specific input connector on the TV. Just to be sure, go to your advanced display settings be be sure that the maximum refresh rate is not 30 hz.

My TV is almost 5 years old, maybe this could be the problem, may have to check for settings for 60 Hz.
The cable could also be the problem, since it was rather cheap, but I still have two other, one from my receiver and one from my PS4.
But since my new monitor will arrive today, I don't have to worry about the TV anymore 😉

It's ok, problem is solved, I got my new monitor, plugged it in and everything is fine. Problem was probably the HDMI cable, which wasn't a high speed one. Maybe my TV isn't set to 60 Hz. Doesn't matter anymore, but thanks for your tips anyway :104::winter2019happybulb:
