Xbox Series X Controller not working with Steam

Hey guys,

Google says the series x controller is PC compatible, and it connects to the PC fine. But games only recognize the D Pad and the B button, which they interpret as the A button. Steam controller settings don't even read it as an Xbox controller, but a "16 button gamepad with hat switch"

Super annoying, been waiting like two weeks to play 2K again haha. Any help very appreciated. Have tried updating steam.

P.S the controller also intermittently disconnects and reconnects to my laptop's bluetooth.

I'm using cheap BT-adapter and windows recognize new gamepad like Xbox one controller. All buttons are working fine. Exept share button, but it isn't supporting by windows yet.

Are you able to check the battery level when using a BT adaptor?

Yes, I see the % there too but that value is not very reliable because it stays at 100% for a long time or the battery runs out (play & charge kit) when it shows more than a 15% or so.

The first game I tried on Steam was Batman Arkham City and the controller wouldn't get recognized on the start screen. Elsewhere it would register the wrong buttons. It worked perfectly on other Steam titles such as Super Bernie World, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor.

If you run it with bluetooth it wont recognize it as an Xbox one controller reads as either 16 button pad or bluetooth xinput. Using a Microsoft wireless adapter is the only way it is read as an xbox one controller. rewasd can hide your controller and emulate either one but that costs 10 dollars. Sometimes running steam as admin can help steam input with problem games. Theres also x360ce which can emulate a xbox 360 pad.

The new controller works fine on three other Steam titles I have via Bluetooth. The only one that doesn't work is Arkham City.

Last night I installed a new bluetooth driver, steam beta client update, and even a Windows update that all dropped within the last 72 hours and for a while there the controller was working flawlessly.

But this morning we're right back to disconnect town, unfortunately. Bizarrely pairing doesn't work properly anymore. I turn the controller on and put it into pairing mode, but the bluetooth panel in settings tells me it can't connect and try again, but only when I take it back out of pairing mode and try again does it connect. Really weird behavior.

Thank you so much. I had problem with my Xbox Series X controller at Steam. Now problem is gone!

For everyone who haa a problem woth Xbox Seris X controller via bluetooth (Windows):
1.First Update firmware controller using Xbox Accessories in MS store app.
The comtroller has to be conected to USB type C cable.

2.If using old Windows 10. Update is necessery.

if you had problem , (I'm experiencing)
Connect to controller via bluetooth dongle (3rd party) to USB 2.0 port (not USB 3.0/3.1)
Because if you connected to USB 3.0. The Xbox series X, not working all buttons in some games in other not working at all.

Testing controller, is easy in Windows Contol Panel/Devices and Printers.
Right click to controller name/Game contoller settings/Properties/Test.

I finally got a Microsoft wireless adapter 2nd generation (which is smaller than the 1st one) from a Chinese seller. It works great on every game. Not only that but it also shows the battery level. That feature was a little big buggy via bluetooth.

I switched to ps5 for steam games because my series x controller bumper broke within 3 weeks :(
