Xbox Series X Controller not working with Steam
Hey guys,

Google says the series x controller is PC compatible, and it connects to the PC fine. But games only recognize the D Pad and the B button, which they interpret as the A button. Steam controller settings don't even read it as an Xbox controller, but a "16 button gamepad with hat switch"

Super annoying, been waiting like two weeks to play 2K again haha. Any help very appreciated. Have tried updating steam.

P.S the controller also intermittently disconnects and reconnects to my laptop's bluetooth.

Same issue here, updated the firmware and the controller works fine on steam plugged in but over bluetooth Steam thinks its a different type of controller with only the joy sticks being recognised as input..

Maybe new xbox controller is not supported yet on Steam????

I think you may be right:

It's probably just a matter of time before they add support

Hi All! It's WORKING now!! Had to download a win10 update:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

cheers!

I'll try this! Thanks
After downloading the update my series x controller is recognized by steam as BOTH an xbox one controller and a "16 button gamepad with hat switch"
I had the exact same experience, I did the firmware update as well as the Windows update and still had the same situation until I unpaired the controller, and re-paired it after having its firmware update. It did seem a bit funky at first, but just tested the same couple of games now and everything is working exactly as I would expect over Bluetooth.

Bit of a mission, but we got there!

Have tried literally all of that and it still refuses to work lmao. In bluetooth settings when it is plugged in it says "paired" but when unplugged it changes to "connected" and stops working.

Controller works completely normally when plugged in but stops when I go wireless
I can confirm Steam doesn't properly recognize the new XBOX Series S/X controller via bluetooth (when plugged it worls well). I updated the controller frmware using XBOX Accessories App and I updated W10 to the latest version. Basically, Steam recognizes this controller twice as another user said:

It still works well outside Steam, for instance in Uplay's environment, as well as in games that don't use Steam (like Genshin Impact). On these games the new XBOX controller is recognized as a regular XBOX controller (I guess a XInput controller).
Same problem with the new controller.

I have it working in Windows device properties receiving proper input, Xbox accessories app, with Xbox app launched games, Epic, Uplay, Genshin etc.

It's only Steam that doesn't work with it over bluetooth. Receives wrong input, seems to regiester the left stick multiple times, B is read as A, triggers don't seem to be registered, etc. Works fine plugged in., just not through Bluetooth.

I also have the Steam settings registering it twice. As an Xbox controller and as the "16 button gamepad with hat switch"

This is with latest firmware updated and Windows 10 Pro 20H2 applied.

Even when I plug in the controller to my pc it isn't recognized. Like Xbox Accessories complains when it's using Bluetooth, but then when I only plug it in it isn't recognized.

Got exactly this.I think it's a Matti of time , but can't wait damnit
Same problem here.
Guys, is your SHARE button not working either? In Xbox Accessories test everything is fine, except for this button.
Updated Windows and gamepad with Xbox Accessories.

That button doen't work for me yet, despite the controller shown in Xbox Accesories App has that button.

BTW, is there any way to check the battery level of this controller when connected via bluetooth? (ASUS USB dongle).
Hi. Just got myself an Xbox Series X controller, as most I couldn't get it to work or at least configure properly. Anyway, may help but I had a Windows update pending (KB4586781) (KB4586864) and a 'feature Update Version 2004. After that it seemed to reconfigured my drivers and connected devices. The controller then connected and worked like it should, didn't have to configure anything in steam either, all just worked, triggers as well.

I have the same issue when playing Fifa21
I'm also having this issue after trying the steps here. With the Windows 10 update, Steam now sees the Xbox controller but also still sees it as a generic controller still resulting in duplicate controllers and inputs.

I attempted removing the drivers, re-pairing the controller, removing config from Steam locally (but upon re-pairing the config seems to come back somehow). Nothing seems to work and this is a Steam specific issue given how they handle controller configuration as a part of the software. I wish I could launch my games without Steam until they fix this but of course I can't
