Xbox Series X Controller not working with Steam
Hey guys,

Google says the series x controller is PC compatible, and it connects to the PC fine. But games only recognize the D Pad and the B button, which they interpret as the A button. Steam controller settings don't even read it as an Xbox controller, but a "16 button gamepad with hat switch"

Super annoying, been waiting like two weeks to play 2K again haha. Any help very appreciated. Have tried updating steam.

P.S the controller also intermittently disconnects and reconnects to my laptop's bluetooth.

Connect it via USB and update the firmware.

thanks for the idea man, it has a type C port up top. will a type C to type C cable work? i'll try it..

Sure it will work. It's only a different plug on the other side, electrically and electronically they are identical.

The controller and your computer won't care if it is a TypeC or TypeA port.

Alright dude, so I downloaded the accessories program, plugged her in, updated firmware. Looked promising.

Then disconnected the cable and launched a game. Same result. Steam loads the config for generic "gamepad" and my game recognizes only the d-pad, and the B button, which it thinks is the A button.

When I leave it plugged in though, works perfectly!

Same issue here, updated the firmware and the controller works fine on steam plugged in but over bluetooth Steam thinks its a different type of controller with only the joy sticks being recognised as input..
Same problem here. I can only use the wireless controller if the USB cable is attached. With Bluetooth the device is only recognised as a generic device. On the xbox key mapping page the keys are working except for the triggers. Already updated the firmware and restarted everything. Still not working. I can only play if the cable is attached.

Tried doing this and unfortunately it only recognises the controller as a "16 button gamepad with hat switch"

Also same issue that "On the xbox key mapping page the keys are working except for the triggers"
Not sure which of the following things fixed it but now it's shown almost correctly in steam. It is detected as XBOX One controler (even though its the new X series). What I have done:
Updated firmware even thought there was no update found.
Restarted PC
Removed the gamepad from the bluetooth devices.
Disabled / Enabled Bluetooth.
Removed batteries from the gamepad and put them back.
Tried to connect it again which didn't worked a few times.
Then I tried to add a new Bluetooth device manually with the mouse, keyboard option (the top option in the list) where it showed up after a few seconds. I have not used the third option (xbox controler...).
Then I started steam and the controller was shown correct.
The triggers are also working ingame :steamhappy:

I was having these problems until I installed the following Windows updates:

Feature update to Windows 10, version 20H2
Cumulative Update Preview (KB4580364)
I can see KB4580364 on my windows update list but I could get it working without installing it.

Maybe new xbox controller is not supported yet on Steam????

I was having the same issue. I updated to Windows 10 Pro 20H2 and had to do 2 firmware updates via Xbox Accessories with my controller to get it to take with Bluetooth. For what it is worth, I was able to get it to fully detect and work while using my Xbox Controller USB adapter but that obviously doesn't solve the issue for anyone wanting Bluetooth.
