Can anyone help me?
Hi and thank you for taking your time to read this. But recently I was going to play a game that I've been playing for a few years but today when I opened the game a pop-up said that a file couldn't be found. I didn't change any of the files and everything should have been the same as any other time Iv'e opened the game. I tried reinstalling the game but it still wasn't working. I don't know how to fix this without deleting all files from the game including saves and progress and was wondering if anyone knew? Thank you so much if you can help at all!

What game? The pop-up certainly didn't came Form Steam. Did it literally say "can't be found"?
And what file?
Try to verify the local game content.

For anyone to help you need to give specifics. From what you wrote you could be talking about 1 of 10,000+ games and 1 of 1,000,000,000+ files

What game?
What File is missing?

The game is ddlc and the pop-up im 99% sure it came from steam, I'll copy and paste exactly what it says-

I'm sorry, but an uncaught exception occurred.

Before loading the script.

That popup is from the game. Steam doesn't even use Ren'Py (which, I suppose, is a Python interpreter).
For starters, check manually whether the file exists.
And why are you installing games on your desktop?

Just here to say that ren'py is a program for VN's. A program many VN's dev's use. like RPGmaker, unity and such.

The file did exist which I thought was weird but the file wasn't an rpi anymore, it was a document and I download the games on my desktop because y comp. is somewhat old and it is easies and faster to download it to my desktop.

I don't get what you're saying. What does "wasn't an rpi" anymore mean? It was supposed to be a *.py file. What's "a document"? Check it's extension.
Dont install games in the desktop folder.

idk what it was to begin with but now instead of it being an .py it is a .doc like i can open it in word. Also thank you so much for helping me out, i might just have to delete all files then re-download the game :(

Ok, the question really is who or what renamed the file.
Verify the local game content. That should restore everything. If not, you've installed a program that messes with the files.
Not having games (or stuff in general) installed in your profile folder is a good idea. Installing it outside of your profile folder may also help with that crapware renaming things.
