so true, but still your problem and who even notice own launcher, so why dont you go into that steam install and look for.exe to see if that can trigger error msg, dont forget look in /bin
typical devs that made a launcher move game executable in to that, and yet this can still be because steam.exe or game launcher is not add to allow list in antivirus app or game own .exe
not sure all steam game forum , have figure this out yet , and still could be user own security app doing it.
so dont exspect help from steam or game devs , they ar not responsible for user own security apps. ( many gamers learn this with firewall and now it seem same issue with antivirus app today.) its nothing new to hardcore gamers, ( dont misunderstand even that still require you run into alot of them blocking issue , so hardcore gamers is not enough it still learn from the past with multiplayer and all that issue. all this is security and user own faulth.
its not something player like to say , but ppl need to learn this asap.
ps.
sorry it seen before start from steam client or devs own launcher , silence the error msg why something dont work, not sure you notice that, and i did not explan it, its simple then you know and i forget to explan it.
Usually problems like these are due to security issues, as Iceira mentions. Stuff like admin privliges, anti-virus and such. Personally I'd start by checking the anti-virus and whitelisting the Steam and/or Steamapps folder.
thats why i want OP to locate that game.exe to see if it trigger a diffrent msg. ( not that easy to know then crash msg has been silence in steam client launcher and maybe even in game devs own menu launcher. ) but i bet some of them games also make own crash log, it could very well be need to contact game devs or read that forum where it is.
@Iceira, finding the Ck2.exe did at least give me an error message, so I should be able to chase down a crashlog. It wasn't a very informative error message "application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b)", but at least it's something. No new files have appeared in the logs directory, though, so it seems I'm not getting far enough in the application for a log dump to occur.
I got the same error message from the Civ 6 executable, when I finally found it. So the same thing is happening to both games, it seems. I could try testing it with the firewall/antivirus disabled, I guess.
- Windows being 32 bit and trying to run a 64 bit application;
- .NET files being out of date/corrupted.
I assume you haven't changed your Windows, so that would mean that the first is out of order. Might be worth it so reinstall the .NET Framework. You can download the latest version here: https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download

i have no doubt it depend what you search for and all have same error code.
i say its a MS code that popup and why game crash it system that tell you it, feel free to follow whoever has a idea.
