Was playing counter-strike source using my mic, no problem. When I quit, both Steam and Windows 10 updated.
Then, when I tried to join my friend's voice channel in Steam, the problem started.
I validated local files, re-installed Steam, confirmed my mic is working, changed mic ports, confirmed my router ports were open, turned off windows firewall, etc. I spent HOURS troubleshooting to no avail.
This morning I woke up and there was ANOTHER Windows 10 update, but the problem did not fix after updating.
Since you're both playing the same multiplayer game on the same server there's several other connection quality variables that come in to play, too: Your connection to that server, their connection to that server, everyone else playing on that server's connection quality to the server, and the connection quality between every one of them and you.
Not much can be done about it if it's connection related. The only thing you can do is choose to play on servers you have a really good connection to.
Appreciate your feedback!
For context, I have been playing with and chatting with the same Steam players in the same voice chat for years now. Never had any problems until Steam updated last night.
I saw someone else who's suffering the same problem report that they were able to avoid the problem by signing in with a different Steam account. So the issue doesn't seem to be the user's software/hardware or internet/connection.
All the evidence seems to point that it's an error on Steam's end that only they can fix.
I see. Then this is something that should be brought up with official Steam support. If you're not aware these are community forums, not official support. The only way to reach official support is through the help system.
An option is to opt in to the beta version of the client. There's a group for it we should also join that has a private discussions forum where we can give feedback and report bugs and issues.
I'm currently using the beta version and there's a client update just about every day if not multiple times per day. The more people that participate the better it will be.
Gotta tell them through help system or beta discussion.
That said, the ticket system for steam is a black hole, and the community discussions validate for folks, like me, that this isn't a problem just on our end and that we do have a reason to hope that developers engage with us.
Also, the more of us having the problem, the more likely it will be fixed, at all, someday.
So, Jack, if you don't have anything useful to say, please just don't.
Backseat moderating and insulting is a violation. Apparently being disrespectful is also a violation according to some moderators but I don't see that in the policies anywhere. It's a nice policy to have to expect everyone to be respectful to each other. We all should be.
There's nothing I said here that's not useful.
A lot of people mistakenly assume these forums are official support. Informing them that it's not IS helpful, and I did it in a very nice, respectful way.
