Fatal Error - Steam needs to be online to update - BUT computer is connected to a network

Hey all,

We've had this issue for the last few days now. Trying to open Steam after a fresh install, it tries to check for available updates, fails to do so, and comes up with the following error message;

Fatal Error - Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again.

Here's the thing... we're connected to the internet. In fact, I'm typing this on my PC currently. Does anyone have any recommendations for fixes to this? I've tried reinstalling, running as administrator, and disabling all security firewalls and antivirus.

I don't know really. You might want to try downloading another steam application from their website and reinstall the steam client.

A common cause of this is could also be an issue with your DNS.

Change the DNS settings on your OS to GoogleDNS and see if it helps.
