resuming games
Hi. I have a new computer and now it looks as though I have to re-install a game from my library to continue it. I tried this and although I am already half way through playing this game, it takes me right back to the start. Just tried it on one so far. I thought steam would retain the progress of the game - it tells me that I have played for 119 minutes and have x achievements, so it knows. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks

Playtime, achievements and actual game saves are totally different things. If the game saves locally, you would need to move the saves to the new computer.

If it uses cloud saves, you could continue the game. Unless you've turned cloud saves off for it of course. Not all games used cloud saving.

Oh dear! As far as I know I haven't turned off cloud saves - but I didn't know it was there anyway. Looks like it may be 'hit or miss'? Thanks for your reply.

You can check on the store page of a game if it supports Steam Cloud saving.
In the feature list on the right:
http://prntscr.com/vj87br

If "Steam Cloud" is listed there and you have it active in your general client settings, the game will automatically upload its latest save files to the cloud each time you close it after a play session.

If it were me I'd just copy save games and such from my old PC anyway rather than assume, guess or rely on cloud saving to always have my current data.

Cloud saving is a convenience, it's not a one stop guarantee, especially since not all game support it.
