steam game says it's already running

When I tried to open a game in steam it didn't open and said "game is already running". So I tried closing it from steam by pressing the stop button but that didn't work so I tried closing it with task manager and that closed it but when I tried to open it in both steam and the shortcut it didn't open and just closed. So when I tried to open it for the second time it again said that "game is already running". Idk how to fix this issue.

Sometimes games from a certain era will leave a residual rundll.exe or rundll32.exe running if they don't shut themselves down properly. Often you'll see at least one of these in the task manager, but go ahead and end task on them until the problem is resolved. Any other instances that were unrelated to the game will start back up once Windows needs them.

i found a file in my task manager called rundll32.exe and i ended it but it still didn't help

also what do you mean by "from a certain era" ? Are you talking about old games ? because this game is pretty new.

Try this:

Exit Steam via the menu. Restart your PC. Boot Steam. Launch game.

I could only guess based on a similar experience that I had with an early Steam game since you didn't specify which game it was. Glad it got worked out anyway.

I'm having a similar problem for my sonic all-stars racing transformed, i know its been a while since you did it but what were the "steam things" you shut down cause im still having issues with it. I've tried to shut down steam and relaunch it, verify the files, close the "rundll32.exe" program in Task Manager, nothing seems to work and the game has never launched and it just keeps giving me the "An error occurred while launching this game : Game already running - [insert random error code, this time 13856]"

Well damn, literally same for me. I wanted to play this recently, and I'm stuck on this issue. Can't be a coincidence...
