Steam is using almost 2 gigs of ram.
After this last major client update steam often uses about 1.5 - 2 gigabytes of ram. Is this normal
and is there any way to lessen this?

Where do you see this? And what does it say?

I recommend to do the steam, settings, library. You can remove some of the "features".

Is this constant high usage, or just a spike usages? There's a different between them.

Try one of these.
- Clear cache, and cookies. Steam > settings > web browser > delete both cache and cookies, restart client.

- Opt in, or out of Steam beta. Steam > account > click change button to opt in, or out of Steam beta.

- Reinstalling Steam, to do this correctly, and keep your games, and screenshots, please do the following.
1. Go to where Steam install, move the Steamapp folder, and userdata folder out of the Steam folder to a safe place.

2. Uninstall Steam, and ensure nothing is left behind the Steam folder should be gone, if it is not, delete it.

3. Reinstall Steam, place back the Steamapp folder, and userdata folder inside the Steam folder, then test to see if issue resolved.

it is not as bad but no game launcher should be using one gigabyte of ram granted i have 8 and windows already uses 3 some of my games like to have more than 4 even the extra gig

This should rid of loading the feed, but you still have the dates showing, I haven't came back looking into this, but you can make changes you want by editing the libraryroot.css file. Steam\steamui\css
