It's to protect Valve as a company from lawsuits, etc from allowing minors to access items that they shouldn't. Also to confirm they are not collecting information from people who are under 13 years old.
No-ones certain if they are following the ESRB rules, or the COPPA rules, but they both require age gates to sign off that the person physically pressing the button to access it - waives their right.
It would be like me going into a place showing drivers licens or passport but still having to write on a piece of paper to confirm i'm over 18.
And no, as someone over the age of 30, i dont get asked for ID. That would be quite offensive actually. There would be something wrong with a person, he is cannot see when a person is vastly older than 18.
Typically my birthdate is saved so that when I log in if it pops up on a store page, I just click next or whatever, and bam. But now it resets my age everytime.
But that is not the puzzling thing. The age check thing usually should only pop up on mature or greater games. It's popping up randomly on any game now. Like I just had it pop up on Final Fantasy III. Okay, strange. Game is rated E 10 and up.
Checked the browser, which I am not logged into, went to an M rated game, and no age check verificaiton. Left that store page, and went to Final Fantasy III again, since it popped on the client. And guess what, the age check thing came back up.
What's the point of having this if it is not going to work properly?
Well, technically it is, but its just a session cookie now and every time you either log out or exit Steam it gets erased.
It's still odd that it is asking for it on games rated E, and not on some rated M.
Only on the mature game i tried, (DOOM) did it pop up.
