I want to install 2 copies of the same game
I am playing SotA which comes with 1 characterslot and no possibility (yet) to add another slot to the game. The only option to have a second character slot sofar is to buy the game again and start your alt on the new game.
Is it possible to buy a second key, install it here and switch between the two?
I will not be playing both copies at the same time, but still want them both to be on steam.
My second question is what will happen with UI settings, screenshot etc per game. Will they all go mixed in the same folder or will they have their own seperate folder?

Not possible to buy a game twice when you already have it on your account. Since you can't own two copy of the same game your second question doesn't even matter.

Create a 2nd steam account if you need to own two copies of SotA.

Assuming you accomplish a second installation, probably. Most games put their files in My Documents, so using the second copy on a different Windows account would separate them.

The prompt upon activation will display that you already own the product.

The other questions are irrelevant since you already have a license showing that you own the game on this account.

What if you buy the 2nd copy not on steam

Create a new account and see if you can family share it. That way you don’t need to purchase a second copy.

So I wanted to run Long War of the Chosen (total overhaul mod for XCOM 2: War of the Chosen) with full Steam support to easily access all workshop mods but with 2 separate and completely different configurations. I am running Windows 10 and purchased a second copy of XCOM 2 while it is on sale ($20 for the complete game with ALL DLCs).

Here are my steps:
1. I uninstalled my current Steam (making sure to backup any custom ini tweaks I did etc.).
2. I reinstalled Steam in C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Local\Programs\Steam.
3. I created a new Windows account AND a new Steam account.
4. I installed Steam again in the same folder location but this time for my alt self.
4. I purchased XCOM 2 Collection Bundle using my alt Steam account.

Voila! Now both Steams and all games/mods/settings etc. are completely independent. Note that you will need two different e-mail accounts for yourself as well, and really the most viable when the game of interest has a great sale like XCOM 2 right now!
