Steam taking Hours to unpack after updating a game
Hello I've been running into an issue that has been getting worse and worse over the last few months. The issue that im running into is that steam is now taking an ungodly amount of time to preallocate space for updates and even longer to unpack even the smallest of updates. I have about 300 gb free on my hard drive and SSD. I have a gigabit connection so i know it isnt any network issues.

Currently my computer wants to take 3 hours to unpack 600 kilobites of data. This is insane and i do not know how to fix it.

Yeah i noticed that but it only does that wih files on my old style HDD.
On my SSD and NVME it usually only takes a few seconds.

Ive unpacked payday2 and hitman2 games that are nearlu 100GB in size, and it does not take 'hours'

Note that steam does delta patches meaning that the small downloads are the changes in various files to

Depedning on how the games' files are distributed it may need to patch one file or all files

Note that any claims of 'it takes forever' are generally due to the fact that your anti-virus is obilgerating the IO performance of your disk causing it to take too long

POE took about 20mins to Preallocate (DISK activity, NO Network). Then it downloaded, then it updated, then it finished.. Something almost TWO Hours to finish. That was done a day or two ago. Doing it AGAIN. Preallocating... Over 20 mins.. Hasn't even started Downloading yet. I do NOT play POE every day.
I have run a Defrag, to almost Zero defragmentation of over 700Gig Free. With Over 700 Gig free, why do I need ANY Preallocation of space for maybe 200meg of update???
With Preallocation continuing, I go off and read a book.... Come back and Preallocation is Near finishing... Still can NOT play the game..... By the time update is done, maybe I don't feel like playing anymore, or I have to do Something Else.
I can INSTALL a Complete game AND START PLAYING IT, in the time it is taking to do ANOTHER update in the past couple of days.
At Least 15mins since I started doing this message. STILL Preallocating. NO Downloading Yet.

POE Just finished Preallocating about 6mins ago. Download happened. 292mb. Now Updating is "flexing" around... 30mins left... 1hour left... 50mins... 29mins... This is while I am doing Nothing, but watching. It started with saying, at one point 11 secs left, Then One Hour...
For 292mb of updates, my computer is MUCH FASTER than that!!
Mark Aug 1, 2020 @ 4:34pm
Time Initiated is 6:48pm.. Now 7:33pm.. Still updating... 55mins... 40mins... 12mins... 55mins.....left....
292mb download..............
Mark Aug 1, 2020 @ 4:59pm
5min... 10mins... 1hour... 18mins... 2hours... 4mins.. 44mins... 18mins... Time Left for an update of 292mb for POE.
STILL CAN NOT PLAY!
Show that I want to watch is starting in 6mins...
I could have Installed 20 other games by now. Second Update in One Week that I have had to NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY.
What is going ON??!!?? What is the Update DOING???? AND DOING??? AND DOING????
Maybe I can try to play POE tomorrow.. As long as there isn't ANOTHER UPDATE.......

Hi I wanna revive this because this is still a huge issue, especially since the new downloads interface. Zero Hour had a 150mb update, it took about 30 seconds for it to start and finish the download. Now it says it has to patch 7gb worth? Steam reckons it'll take me over an hour to do that.

This hasn't been an issue for me until the recent Steam UI facelift.

Stop use a laptop in battery mode, and yes we can reply rude like that, then you dont give system spec or any real system information.

and if im right , then all will laugh at you, i and other helper here soon got enough of lack of information, soon all reply will be fix your computer problem , noone write that slow without something is wrong.

even my 10 year old laptop is faster then your pc, can you not see something most not work as intended at your pc.

any tech person or IT Supporter will not accept any user input with things that slow, i did not say you cant have other issue, but thats not normal,

ps.
do notice it's funny most dont have slow issue then harddisk was new empty, i did not say i catch all with same issue, but even tech person here will agree so rare someone said 4TB new disk is 1hour to install. so take that as warning anything lesser then 250GB with a 50GB unpack ratio 1 to 5 you are already in trouble. for lack of free space that effect disk performance.

in a few years anything lesser then 500gb or 1TB free disk space issue is seen as user own mistake

In what way does ur post contribute to this issue?

Anyway, my buddy has this problem on his Lenovo Legion, and it’s only Mordhau that does this currently. He is on a wired 300/60mbit connection. Mordhau has recently been updated, took a few minutes on my PC(about as good as my friends laptop). He has to wait about an hour for every 100mb, again - only a few games does this.

Specs:
Intel I7-8750 CPU 2.2GHz
GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
256GB SSD + 1TB HDD
16GB 3200mhz RAM

Weve tried to; change installation to SSD directory, change data center location several times, delete cache, reinstall game, reinstall Steam, making sure PC is not throttling laptop bc of power settings/issues, checking drivers/updates through Win Update and Lenovos own website and lastly checking AV for issues. All i can tell him now is to try reinstalling Windows. Im sure i forgot something, we have tried alot to fix this. Still has the problem.

I've heard people complain about slow updates for Mordhau forever now. Just like with Ark, it's a developers issue due to how they patch their games causing slow update processes. They're games that seem to use large file blocks, causing large (and thusly long) rewrites even for small updates.

What is this your post, maybe you should read all the missing info on what OP said or left out.

and then you try to hijack with your spec.
Lenovo has been caught in network management on DL that reduce to slower data from network.
and then you dare to say you want info on why your disk is slow. maybe because they are near full and not in fullperformance, and in top of this laptop is noterious slower then desktop pc.
they are build for saving power that and have reduce I/O and the lesser free room you just pile more reduce speed in top of this.

just so you get it those disk size was also there over 10 years ago to a average laptop, you might have a newer cpu and gpu , but disk size is a joke, but could be enough but most desktop pc will say that small or tiny disk, and yet you sit and dont get why its slow.
and i bet you have use over 75% of disk space or more, again you can lie all you want , its funny no one complain then disk was new and empty, and that my proof.

upgrade your disk or vist a friend of your i bet he has bigger and better disk and speed then you have, and that why a friends pc might help you debug you slow disk issue here.

Oh god you are annoying. First I'm not using a laptop, secondly I have a pretty expensive modern rig set up. I'm not going to bother giving my specs now because this post is old and I have already solved my issue.
