Wtf? Since When Did Steam Client Bootstrapper Use So Much RAM?
Last update seems to have caused steam x32.exe to use upwards of 300MB of system memory, up significantly from the 20-50MB it used to use. Which now combined with steamwebhelper.exe means steam now uses over 500MB of system memory when running, which is problematic if you only have 8GB of RAM and play games that need 5GB+.

Any way to fix it or is it yet another boneheaded decision (i.e. steamwebhelpers stupidly high RAM usage) by valve?

I did notice the same thing and opened a ticket to their support and one of the staff have implied the issue could be technnical connected to my hard drive not getting too much free space and should be clean with more frequently*.
I did not understand how memory usage could be connected to how much of free space need to have. But still I am as well noticing +200 mb on the main process of the client just for idleing but the amount of webhelper process have been consuming memory for quite sometime. Even with the recent change to profile functionality and animated screens made worse the consumption of the physical ram.

When I log to Steam my memory usage stick at 3.24-3.38 gb. Yesterday had a update and I had a high pick of memory usage at 3.78 gb just for idleing.
When I browse on two diferent windows on community hubs and stuff alike, the consumption get much more like 3.81 gb to 4-5 gb. Depending on how many windows are open the consumption can be higher even when opening artworks and screenshots.

Asides from available memory or memory on use I don't think that affect the perfomance on game. On my experience I haven't being seeing any hiccups or perfomance loss.

RAM usage of the bootstrapper has increased most certainly, but the total RAM usage of the bootstrapper and all the webhelpers hasn't actually changed for me. Seems more webhelpers are lower now, so they might have shifted things.

for me it uses about 520mb doing nothing and increases from there.

For me Webhelper and Bootstrapper are the one taking up to 2gb of ram just idleing, already tried the low bandwith and performance mode without any change in ram consumption

It's normal, the webhelper derpy in that it always spawns multiple processes no matter the web content.

O_O

Yeah, not even Chrome's that bad (these days, it used to better with memory use) so best guess is Valve f**ked up something.

My ticket still opened and last reply from their support they mention saying going to Big Picture mode and exitting back to desktop ''soft reset'' the amount of resources the memory is being used.

I still haven't tested this possibility since I didn't quite understand with the meaning of the sentence ''soft reset''. Does it mean will I have to be forced to do ths ''lame trick'' everytime?
Is getting dizzy to talk to Steam support.

Same way Google Chrome browser does.
