I don't have a recent FarCry because I think it is Windows only, so I cannot tell if it pays attention to the usual launch options for source games (I do have non-Steam FarCry 1 & 2 in Win7, which I rarely boot anymore). But if you right click on each game in Steam Library and find where you can set Advanced Launch Options, you might try -windowed or -sw (which does same thing), possibly with a width (-w) and height (-h) in pixels. Then once the game is running set game options to the native resolution of your display, then remove the temporary launch options.

Otherwise post on one of those FarCry game forums where someone may know more about that.
I tried optimizing it with Nvidia. I don't know if that even changes resolutions based on my monitor. I was somehow able to put the game in windowed mode and actually click on things ,but it was like I was on a timer because it'd go back to the full screen randomly and pop the error back up. I looked at the in game resolution and I can't change it. It is stuck on 1440 x 900 - 60hz which is what the error keeps recommending me and it's what i've always runned.
