All game icons have become .url files

I restarted my computer the other day and all of a sudden, none of my Steam games want to launch. They're all listed as ".url" files, and appear as blank sheets of paper. When I click to launch one, it asks me what I want to open it with: the internet browser or to search the Windows store for an app. Solution?

Got exactly the same problem here, tried to Verify integrity and rebuild IconCache but neither was successful. If i try to locate the game.exe it will make all of the shortcuts the same. The issue is only with steam games on C: drive, G: is so far unaffected and so are all other non-steam shortcuts. Tried other recommendations to no avail.

I had the same issue but, it was after refreshing my pc , all reg keys was reset to default ,
All go guys need to do is,
Open With the app.
Choose Internet Brower (not google or firefox its called internet browser it self)
and set it was default too!
and all should be good you can run it from it
icons should be back good

Um... okay... I guess I can give that a shot, assuming I understood you correctly.
As long as I can still play games offline.

well you run it from steam

If you set windows to display file types, as you should,
steam game icons will show up as .url.
Choose to run with steam, see what happens.

They are always .url.
Its safer to let windows display file types. So you cant get tricked to open a virus.jpg......exe

mine happens after refreshing my windows 10, so it clears and reset all registry keys. so steam games shotcuts becomes unknown.

It was not a steam registry issue. It was all .url shortcuts. If you associate .url with "internet browser", it fixes the shortcuts.

Aracone it was file type registry, installed by the steam.

Uuuuum... I mean, I know I can just open Steam and run them, but... I'd just like to know how to get my icons back? My desktop looks so bland now.

same problem ... how to resolve it i try too open with arma 3.exe and now all my icon are arma 3 -_-

When pressing on it windows is gonna ask, "What do you want to use to run this app?".
Press on internet browser and it's going to restore all icons/shortcuts

You can also associate the .URL extension through the Default Apps page of Window's Settings.
Start Menu > Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Choose default apps by file type
