How do I prevent strangers from sending me a message?
I'm having a long time problem with scammers keeping sending me a friend invites and now they even send me messages no matter I don't have them in my friend list. Is there any way how to prevent this while keeping my profile public?

try privating your inventory and not showing your knife on front page

Also, leave the groups that you have in common with those spammers.

There must be an option in Steam settings allowing messages from everyone or just friends then.

Yeah I had one of these today. I was under the impression that it was impossible to message anyone not on your friends list and this is the first time it has happened. The message was blurred and unreadable. Is this a vulnerability of the new chat system, if so steam need to get on this straight away. I just X'ed this out but you could easily open it by mistake.
Edit - About the friend invites, I think you should be able to put restrictions on invites like maybe
Level 10 and above or at least two years membership, stuff like that.

There already is a restriction on invites. Additionally, don't be in groups with spammers, then they can't spam you.

Yes, but not the restrictions I would choose and as for not being in groups with spammers, how do you suggest we find out which of the thousands of groups thousands of members are spammers. You might have the time but I don't.

I've privatized my inventory and removed the items showcase from the profile.
I've been only in 2 groups with higher amount of ppl so I left them both.
Yeah would be great if Valve would do something about this already -.-
Thanks for tips, hope it's gonna help ^^

Well didn't help, got over 5 messages over night :D I think that I'll just mark everything as private, coz it's really pissing me off -.-

It would appear it would most likely emanate from accounts that we're or have been already breached but in the meantime, stick to reporting and blocking as usual.

I hope they're finally gonna do something about it. I'd use an option to disable random invites too. Fxp as FB does - that only a friends of friends of yours can send you a friend request. I've privatized everything, left all the groups I've been in and this still bothers me :( Shouldn't be that hard for such a company to invest some money in this (/.-)
