[SOLVED] Would like to play on the TV in another room
EDIT: SOLVED

Got a powerful PC in my study, but I just bought a 4k TV I would like to use as a monitor (different room). I just confirmed that the controller (x360) sends the signal perfectly, so the only issue now is the audio/video. How can I do this without spending money?

If it helps, it's a Samsung UHD TV, so maybe there's a screencast app I can install?

I also have a 2013 Mac Mini I could use, but it's unclear for me the whole Steam streaming. Would it run my PC's library on the mac, duplicate the video (locking both machines), or what?

Or is there another option, that is not the Steam Link (heard only bad things about it)?

Many thanks!

Well, you could move your PC to where your TV is or vice versa.

Not an option. PC in the study (use it for work), TV in the living room (family space)

You could get a reaaaaaaaaaaally long hdmi cable and plug it into your computer on one end.. and then into your tv on the other. Ya, while set up it'll be a little inconvenient in your house since there will be a looooong cord going from your study to yur living room.. but it should do the trick.

Especially since you said you already tested your 360 controller works in the living room even while it's linked to the computer in your study. So once you do that you should be all set.. Since with the hdmi cable you should be able to treat your tv like an additional-monitor of your computer.

Also not an option. Needs to be done wirelessly

Your only really viable options are steam link or a long hdmi cable.

i wish you'd explain why moving the computer is "not an option" and why using a long hdmi cable is "not an option".

The only thing i can think of is you have a pet rabbit or pet rat or other 'chewing' pet that you let roam free in your living room and so are afraid it'll chew through wires.

It may help people think of more options for you if you explain WHY (in detail) options you've "thrown out" won't work for your personal set up, because then maybe people could help you think of work arounds.

You realise the hdmi cable wouldn't have to be trailing through your house at *all times*, right? You could just hook it up when you want to play games out in your living room, but otherwise wind the cord up and keep it tucked away somewhere.

Hanomaly has a point. Run a HDMI cable either fishing it through the wall and up over through the attic, or just connect it when you need it.

Make sure you keep it under 50'

You can't send the signal wirelessly from a PC. Cable TV you can, not a PC.

I cannot move my PC as I have kids. I want my "work space" in my study, without unmounting my PC case every time I have the house for myself and play some Steam games. Bringing the TV to the study is also not an option due to size and space issues. The "long HDMI cable" solution is not logical as such a cable would not only be annoying, but also cost several times over a ChromeCast or Steam Link. The idea is that I now have a SmartTV, why can I select it as a "projector" or something similar?

Get a lanbox

Ok, about the Mac solution: would it work?

Run a cable man...seriously. Any homeowner can fish a cable between joists, and drill a hole in the top plate, run the cable then drop it down again...it's not hard. Just do it before summer or you'll be cursing me.

You're gonna give yourself an aneurysm with all these fancy ideas.
