Speedtest 99.75 Mbp/s Steam download 72.4 Kbp/s 8hrs for 300MB download!
Since yesterday I've been struggling with a terrible download speed on Steam.

Speedtest.net is clocking at 99.75 Mbp/s and Steam is downloading at 72.4 Kbp/s at the time of the test. I should be able to get close to 12MBp/s.

The Steam download speed will fluctuate and sometimes go to 10MBp/s briefly and then plummet down to the Kbp/s range to stay there for most of the time. Currently I'm trying to download a 300MB game and the estimated time is 8hrs!

- I'm running Steam on OSX 10.12.4 and am running Sophos antivirus. (I've swapped between Sophos, Avira and TotalAV today and checked out several setting which didn't help)
- Swapped between different download regions.
- In the download settings the 'limit bandwith' has been set to unlimited.
- Cleared download cache.
- There are no other computers or phones on this network.

Does anyone have any suggestions where I can look to fix this?

You said you tried three antivirus programs, have you tried no antivirus and/or windows defender?
Just shut em all down as a test.

What is your Peak speed?

Peak is 20.4MBp/s.
I ran the download without any antivirus or firewall earlier, no change.
It could just be that lots are downloading now because the store page just switched highlighed deals.

Is this a recent issue? Maybe it will speed up soon, if not then try the rest of the stuff like different regions.
Exactly same problem here. Very frustrating
I'm having the same issue, no firewall or anti-virus active. Is it regional? I'm in Europe
yes that is very helkpful
same problem in france here, i'm soooo pissed right now, i've been trying to DL all day, nothing but 54byte/S

Lots of people from central europe here, that means it's probably not your fault.
Wait a bit and let the download servers rest a bit.
Maybe try a different region like I said earlier.
Same problem in Poland i ve been trying to download dying light and speed is 500kb's when i download bf1 on origin it was 7/8mb's
I've tried 10 different regions. No difference.

I suppose it is the first weekend of the sale and everyone needs to install their 30GB games.

Good to know that it's not just me.

Same issue here. I usually get around 50 MB/s (400 mbit/s), and speedtest still gives me 400+ mbits when I test. Steam fluctuates between 500 KB/s and 10 MB/s- I also tried deactivation antivirus and stop all other computers in the house from downloading anything. I am on a wired connection, not wifi.
Typically enough, I am a dad, so I don't usually have time for gaming, so that one evening I can, download bogs down so that it won't finish before tomorrow.
This is why you buy your stuff on the Thursday the sale launched, maybe on the smartphone app while going to work/school and then start the downloads remotely from the app to your PC which is running at home. Then you get all your downloading done on the low usage week days and got all the games ready for the weekend.

You don't even need the app to do this, you can just log in to the steam website on any PC and buy games and start them remotely back home from the website .

No one did that and that could part of the reason be why it all went slow.
