added friends to steam chat from the games i play

hi,
im new to the onoine world of gaming. Im wondering how to find another person's profile ID so that i might dd them to the steam chat?
Everytime I search for a friend who is on my gaming list, It comes back telling me that they do not exist.
'm very lost and confused and 'Ive searched online for the answer but can't seem to understand their instructions either.

Are they in your friends list?
Open friends%chat then select a friend from that list make a voice call they accept then on the right of the voice call add another friend keep adding them to this voice call and you will form a group chat. This group will apppear at the base of Friends&chat
Alternative is to use Discord.
But Steam chat works fine.

They are on my friends list in the game i play with them, but the trouble im having is adding them to the steam chat friend's list. i cant seem to find ttheir actual profile ID or actual steam name to seach. Im not looking to voice chat with anyone like you are suggesting at all. just want to type with them
