Lost the "R" Authentication Code
Hello, im having trouble in changing my password, its asking me for an code that i lost long time ago, when i lost my phone. I have acess to the email, but it sends me an code that will send me to a screen asking for another code that beggins with "R". But i have not. Im logged in the account because its on auto loggin, but i have no idea the password anymore...

Im on the steam logged on my desktop playing the games in the same ip for years, i have the confirmation of games that i have bought from my card in my email. This is bad design, i need to be able to change my password if im logged in and have access to at least 1 way of confirmation....now i cant change the password because i need a code that i have no more...even if it obvious that im the owner of this account. How to proceed? Already open ticket but got no awser for almost 14 hours....:steamfacepalm:

Pls people, share some light with me....

Contact the support
Proof that you are the owner of this account
They will remove the authenticator for you and then you can link your account to a new phone or not. And if you do link it to a new phone you will also receive a new R***** code

In the future you can negate the "bad design" by keeping track of the recovery codes provided to you when you enable Steam Guard, which can be used instances just like this when your phone is lost, stolen or broken. I keep mine in the password manager I use. It should beats hand wringing and being mad while you're waiting for hours or days in the support queue...

i think an email must value more in terms of validation than a code that can be stolen or copied. I just need to change data from my acc using an email that is registered for yeats in this acc, with all the financial stuff data from steam in it, but no, i need an code that is provide olnly one time. This is not good design, i need other ways of validate, and for me, gmail is more secure than an writen code...

And the golden rule for all programmers, your user is always very dumb, MAKE IT EASY!

But its not like im put the fault on steam, its my fault, im assuming it, but make it more easy =P

They did make it really easy, they explicitly told you to write it down and store it in a safe place. You know, like with your other important papers like your birth certificate, your passport, etc.
DoomGuy Jul 2, 2020 @ 11:40am
yeah but the papers i can get a second go, but this code? no, its unique, thats not easy. Maybe for people like you that are so clever, but for me your average stoner? its like sending a blind guy in a shooting...

but ok, you have reason at your side, now its only the support, those heroes without face that endure seas of morons like me asking them to solve problems that are avoidable.

Email accounts can't be stolen? This sounds like an argument of "I think this would be convenient for me right now", and you haven't stopped to consider that experts in this arena have already sorted these things out. So unfortunately you're mistaken.

Well you set up the mobile authenticator and apparently didn't understand what that means for your account. Steam isn't responsible for your lost, broken, or stolen phone or the fact you didn't keep the recovery codes and did everything you could to handcuff yourself into needing support to regain full control of your account. You need to be more careful in the future. That's on you, no matter how much you want to shift the blame.

This doesn't mean every dummy complaint indicates bad design, it might just be exceptional dumbness that can't realistically be mitigated. Steam is easy to use. But in my experience ♥♥♥♥ sapiens are always building better dummies.

Maybe you should stop being a stoner then. The code... should be on the papers... because you were supposed to put it there.

The unique code is supposed to be separate and totally independent so writing it down is the easiest way to store it safely. People have proved time after time with other online account that they keep records of such codes in their emails for instance and then cry when everything gets outright hijacked.

Good advice doesn't need to come from an authority to be good advice, neither does the truth.

you sir is an philosopher of life, great knowlege comes from your simplier words.
When you enable security, you do it for having codes, backups etc for yourself ro get in.
The security aspect is just a secondary thing.
