Total war games with nvidea/g-sync & v-sync...
I'm having a bit of a conundrum as I have just started playing Shogun 2 again as normally with all my games I have g-sync running. So in Shogun 2 campaign map I'm not getting any tearing but once in a while I'm getting a quick black flicker??? I've ran g-sync with in game v-sync and I think it solves the issue but I don't want to use v-sync if I can help it.

Then I tested out empire total war only using g-sync in the campaign map and the 10-15 mins running (Similar time to shogun 2) I don't get any black flicker... My fps in empire is high like 200+ but with shogun 2 80,90, 100 but rarely goes over 100.

Any ideas of other have nvidea cards and a g-sync monitor. Thanks

What's so wrong with vsync?

I'm running a 2080 Super and a g-sync monitor, and sometimes game engines are a little weird. I've got g-sync turned on all the time as well, and if a game works fine as is. Great. And if I need to turn v-sync on to address some less than perfect visuals it's a perfectly fine solution.

I mean do you have any serious technical reasons why you need to avoid using v-sync? Or is this just some feeling you've settled on? Or have you gobbled up some claptrap about how terrible v-sync is and only unworthy barbarians who don't mind rotting in hell should consider it? Because in either case, it might just be a little silly.

as Brockenstein point out, watch out for old game and 60hz+, many of them is build on a game engine run at that speed. and go past it can lead to odd game behavier. ( scripts fail to save game corrupted ( skyrim is one of them ) atleast its showable there.
and you should have ask in own game forum, not the first time if a player have discover fiddle with files can change a game.

In general if you use G-Sync there is no real reason to use V-Sync as V-Sync adds latency and stuttering where as G-Sync doesn't but like you said alongside Iceira these are older engines and issues and bugs can occur.

Just in some Total war games since I've had G-Sync I've not needed to use V-sync as G-Sync alongside freesync was designed to eliminate the use of V-Sync as it does't have the drawbacks of V-Sync but clearly these older engines have issues with only using g-sync.

Well, in this case does using v-sync add latency or stuttering that impacts your experience?

I think people tend to engage in a bit of hyperbole as far as v-sync is concerned. Sure vsync isn't a perfect technology, but it seems like people just magnify tiny problems into avoid at all costs rhetoric. And at some point it ends up being silly. It's just a thing you can use, if and when you need it, on a per game basis. And v-sync and g-sync aren't mutually exclusive, so feel free to use them together if need be.

What I know is that G-sync, as the other ones that does the same thing. It's better to have a locked frame rate, might be that that causes your black flicker?

Thanks for all your replies like I said I know what they all do and I have never said once that V-Sync is bad totally agree with @Brockenstein if it is there and it helps use it but they are drawbacks and that is the reason G-Sync & F-Sync were created to negate the drawbacks of V-Sync.

This is from my understanding, and something you should consider.

Not all games are made the same, or treated the same. With that in mind, if game has issues, and issues are resolved by one, or more options then that something to think about, and see how it relates, and how it could be tied to.
- Using rivatuner, or etc to limit to X amount of Max FPS.

- VSync try to force match frames, and X amount of Max FPS set by the devs.

- Gsync try to match frames.

When games are made, if Gsync doesn't resolve issue, and VSync does, then this is something devs did to get their games to run correctly visually, or possibly game logic physic.

Example Max Payne, that game need to be lock at a certain FPS, or else you lose jump momentum, and get stuck on the walls, soon you force limit of FPS, it completely fixed the game for anything that on Vista, and newer OS. That what I meant by game logic physic.

Like if you're not playing fighting such as tekken, or FPS online such as counter strike, then don't even need to care about VSync, just enable it if it fixes the problem, only reason don't enable it, if it causes the problem.
