How to get rid of pointless, persistent notifications?
Where can I turn specific types of notifications off?

I like getting notifications when someone sends me a message or responds to something I posted. But I also sometimes get mysterious nonsense notifications. Right now, for example, the notification icon is green. So I check what it is, and it says there's a new item in my inventory.

What inventory? What kind of item? It's not a game is it? Games are in my library, not in my inventory. Games is all Steam is for, right? Is it a message or something? No clue. When I click on it, I'm sent to a page with a picture that looks like a Portal companion cube. I can't seem to do anything with it. There's some buttons about trading, but why? Why would I want to do that? What's the point of this? And the icon stays green.

It's in my way. It's useless nonsense getting in the way of a useless feature. So how do I turn these notifications off? I can't find anywhere how to manage this.

There are different types of community items within Steam. From gun skins in CS:GO, hats in Team Fortress 2, to trading cards, emoticons, and backgrounds. Without being able to see anything on your account, there's really not much any other Steam user can do to tell you what the item is and what you can do with it.

I'm not interested in what I or anyone else can do with it, I just want to know how to turn it off.
Click the green row, see what items you got.
Maybe cards from an old game.

You never got that info or cards before?

You can't turn it off. Steam is also more than just for games.

This particular notification has disappeared now, so that's some thing at least. But I guess every time I try out a new game, I'll get more of these.

Chillax, the new-item-notifications only plop up when you get a new item and new items are limited. Unless you buy them from in-game stores (which you won't do if you don't care about those items), buy them on the community market (which you won't do for the same reason) or trade for them (which I, by the way, don't do either). It's not "every time you try a new game" either. Well, when you play games that you bought that drop trading cards, you'll get those. But it's 3-4 cards per paid game.

No way, don’t chillax! These stupid, pointless item notifications are total BS, which harm the functionality of the Steam mobile application. Where normally a user would pay attention to the notifications to see if his friends sent a message to play a game, or how many people were online, now the app notification is meaningless, and ignored, breaking the purpose of having a notification, or worse, causing users to bury it on a page where they aren’t “triggered” to click the app and see wtf there is another notification for. I love steam normally, but this has been annoying the crap out of me for years. Hire a UX designer. Your app is broken steam!

I hate companies forcing crap on you. Steam with items, xbox with achievments and playstation with trophies. That's why I buy games on GOG, don't have that crap

They have something like that in their galaxy launcher

I don't use galaxy launcher. I download the game and install it.
Steam doesn't have that option (wish they would)

I'd like to second this notion, I want to turn off notifications for me receiving a stupid "trading card game" in a game that I just launched. It's useless and I don't need it in my SYSTEM-WIDE NOTIFICATIONS on Steam.
