Transferring games to another drive, what happens with user/documents/ save games and other
So i now have 3 drives. F: was originally boot with windows, C: newer SSD put windows here and some games. Now i have another drive X:, i'm trying to clean my old F: drive which is HDD,

What i've done
- Created new steam folder in X:
- Moved a few games over

I want to delete everything from F: but moving the games didn't move files in the user/documents folder like saves and game settings. Do i have to do this manually? and if so how do i let steam know the location has moved so it recognizes saves and settings?

There is no windows on my X: so there are no users folders

No need to do anything with the files in Documents.

Remove f drive and attached it to a USB external enclosure then format it.
The drive letter is assigned from the USB position you have it installed to.
If you want to change the drive letter change USB position.
What do mean get rid of it? just stick it in a bubble package and store it if you want to.

I'm trying to complete clean it or remove it, but don't want to lose save games and settings.. Might use it for another PC

I'm just wondering how to transfer saves to my new drive <- this is the main question in the thread.

All my saves and settings are in this drive and they weren't automatically moved when moving the games

You need to move the settings and saves from f:\users (old userfolder) to c:\users (current user folder) manually.

Then you’ll be needing this handy utility.

If i want to put them in X: instead, (x: has no folders except steam atm) will this still work?

Ok so i just tested with Crusader Kings 2 to see what would happen.

-Uninstalled from F:
-Deleted the crusader kings folder in user/documents. including saves
-Installed Crusader Kings in my X: drive
-Launched and saved a game, it recreated a save folder in the F: drive

What do i need to do to get it to start generating saves in X: ???

It's not possible. These save locations are hard coded into the games. If saves are being generated in the user's documents folder, then that's where they will always be saved, regardless of the drive upon which the game is installed.

Yes but what happens when i remove the F: then?

Why do you think those games put their savegames on that drive? They usually don't.

Also this:

If your Windows 10 user folder (%UserProfile% - usually c:\users) is on the F drive then that needs to be moved to a different drive.

As far as the game is concerned, it's not saving to F:. It's saving to %UserProfile%\Documents\ and the value of %UserProfile% is determined by Windows.

Problem is, moving that %UserProfile% folder is not straightforward and can unintentionally break other things on the systeem.

I would just reinstall Windows from scratch if I'd ended up in this situation.

Ok i think i figured it out. Under 'My PC' my 'Documents" folder was still set to F:/users/user/Documents even though windows is on my C:

Changing it to X: hopefuly this will work.
