Happens to me too sometimes. Seen it both with the wireless adapter and over bluetooth.
Just for clarification, you did plug the actual controller into the PC by USB right? Best way to check where the problem is. If it's a Bluetooth issue, that should confirm it. Do you have an XBoxOne to try it out on?
If it does not happen "often", it just happened.
Test to know which
My xbox series controller has a same issues. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ frustrating, I nearly throw my controller to the wall.
enjoy playing a game. Suddenly, my character keep moving forward (or left/right), can't control my character, then my controller start blinking then disconnect then reconnect (2-3s) and back to normal. Look like my controller gets disruption by something. it happens at least 1 time per day.
(using bluetooth connection on PC, all drivers/firmware lastest version)
That happend to me too. Was super frustrating. Finally found the solution.
You have to go to the Microsoft Xbox homepage and download an programm called
"Xbox Accessories".
https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/accessories/xbox-accessories-app
Install it, then connect your gamepad to your pc via USB cable (important!).
Then start the program and "scan for updates".
It will dowload some new gamepad chipset drivers and install it ON THE GAMEPAD CHIP, which takes a few minutes.
After that you are good to go, did not have a single disconnection like you described in nearly 6 months since doing this.
