Steam is using the wrong graphics card

i have a nvidia gtx 1060 but it is using the intergrated intel graphics does anyone know how i can fix this as it is making my games run badly

What Steam does is irrelevant regarding to what your games do. Steam can not tell a game which videocard to use.
Your videodriver does that.

Go into your Nvidia Control Panel and change the preferred device. If games then still use the wrong one, set it for the individual games.

Additionally, if you have a desktop PC and not a laptop, then make sure the monitor is connected to the nVidia videocard and not the integrated videochip.

i have 2 monitors do i need to set the one that is plugged into the graphics card my main monitor

Plug them both into your videocard/graphics card.

The videocard is the one on the lower end, not up where your USB and sound ports are.

but it only has 1 hdmi slot at the bottom

Then use a DisplayPort -> HDMI Adapter, you may have even gotten one with your videocard.

no this is not the solution to this abandoned old thread as his wiring was wrong. no setting in the world can fix that.
