What are the PaxHeader folders?

I have noticed all games have these folders, and they include 1kb files named the same as the folder one level up.

I've had a couple of games - Batman Arkham Asylum, and Dragon Age Origins that won't start. When I delete the PaxHeader folders in the game directory, the game magically starts.

Can there be an option to delete these folders, or prevent them from being created in the first place?

That should be taken up with the game developers.

You want me to... "take up" with game developers the fact that Steam is adding folders to game directories that break the game...

Folders that don't seem to have a good reason to exist.

For games that are 9+ years old?
