you have something that dosnt belong to you and your not the original owner and dint purchace this your self . just cos some one has died dosnt mean you can claim there cd key . as this was registerd to them so they activated it in there account .
you need to buy the game ur self .and activate it in your own account .

Steam will not transfer games between accounts.

Whether or not you can manage to "steal" the account... I guess it depends. To my knowledge, having a photograph of a retail box with the key can be used to recover an account...
You do not own the game. You're just in possession of a disc. This does not grant you ownership of the license.
Which is permanently linked to the account it was activate on.
He was family she has the right on what he owned as he left it to her so , how can you say that I dont own the game ? It's in her family possesion not stoled or anything so why cant others enjoy a game allready brought ? wtf is with this stupidity ? you bought a game u should be abble to play offline , online how you want if you have the cd and cd key.
As i already said, the game is permanently linked to the account and is not transferrable.
It is irrelevant if the account owner is alive or not.
The only way to access the game would be if the deceased explicitly bequeathed the account to you in his last will or testament.
If no one inherited the account, then it will no longer be accessible, to anyone.

Hey, don't need to rant at us as we are just gamers here. Steam Support isn't here, this is a public forum. It would be great if you explain. Basically, the copy you have is a copy. Meanwhile on Steam, there is another copy. Just because you have a copy, doesn't mean you own all copies. In first place, the person didn't buy the game from Steam itself. And Steam operates the store but does not own Mafia so they can't give keys that dont belong to them. You are free to play the physical CDs since you have it. If it is a digital key, i am pretty sure somewhere there is a terms and condition that says that all keys can only be redeemed once. If someone can solve the question of Multiplayer issues when it comes to account transfer, i guess it is not easy for digital world which is stilll kinda modern and evolving? Furthermore, in Steam, we are always told that we bought a license whenever we purchase a game from the developer. Licenses are tied to our accounts and are non-transferable. I am not saying I like this, but if you search the forums, you will find that the questions you asked have been answered. Many times. We should take it up with the publishers one day and asked them to sell physical CDs again, whom we can exchange for something else after playing. For your problem,i understand that the developers may kindly issue another key to you assuming that they dont cry about the fact that they told the purchaser (your gf brother) that the key can only be redeem once. Please contact the developer of Mafia II, Steam can't give away keys.
Mafia 2 is a Steamworks title, so activation and playing through Steam is required, even for physical copies. The DVD is pretty much useless anyway as the data on it is outdated.
Thanks for the anwsers i just poped a bit sorry , but I think it is just stupid how things developed....with this digital keys...and steam....I liked it better before when u could just ask for thinks and they would work it out..but it seems that the days of when we where actualy valued and the services where for our conviniente are gone.....I'll write to the developer even tho all of this just made me not want to play anything....Thanks for the quick anwser you guys are noice :D
Platforms like Steam exist because the developers did not like their customers sharing games.
Licenses were always not transferrable, but with Steam, they can actually enforce it now.
Keys are only can be redeem once on Steam, and bound to one account forever.

Steam support will not help you search for people accounts with keys only. On top of that you must know the account name, and have proof of ownership, meaning you must know how to prove to support you have proof such as things only the "decease owner" would know, so if know none of that, then you're ♥♥♥♥ out of luck.

Can either wait for sale on Steam for it, which goes pretty low price, or check 3rd party key reseller sites.

Here list of 3rd party resellers. Gamebillet has it on sale for $6 right now.

yea, i guess it is something like that. I never purchased those CDs before.

We should go old school CD (dont need no internet or Steam) which we can sell on after playing and still play without the latest patch. I too always wish there is a way to buy/sell single player games second hand but then the price of games would surely increase in tandem.

Anyhow, I expect the CD to have ample warning that the key will be tied to an account permanently. But OP, please do contact the dev. and explain your needs.
