Steam VR Error 436 Resolved
I recently experienced this issue and after doing tons of the complicated and unnecessary steps that people advise re: uninstalling/installing/debug/etc... (Yes, I did them all to no avail)

I've only had my headset for two days so you can imagine how upset I was after receiving this error. Anyways, I noticed that above the block where it says "Display Connection Trouble" there was another block that says "Some Add-ons Blocked" " Due to a recent crash, some SteamVR add-ons have been blocked."

I realized that you cannot "unblock" these add-ons with your headset plugged in. For whatever reason, I was unable to access the settings menu for SteamVR while the headset was connected to the computer.

These add-ons need to be unblocked in order for your headset to work properly and for the error 436 to go away.

This guidance is nowhere to be found, and it's probably the easiest solution that could have been leveraged to fix the problem so I hope it helps.

To unblock these add-ons follow these steps:

Step 1: Unplug your headset/linkbox, controllers, and any other VR devices you have plugged into your PC.

Step 2: In SteamVR, go to Settings > Startup / Shutdown / Manage Add-Ons.

Step 3: Turn them on.

Step 4: Quit SteamVR.

Step 5: Reconnect your headset, this time using a different USB port, and wait for drivers to install.

Step 6: Restart SteamVR.

Step 7: Go back to enjoying your day

I'll be damned, this resolved error 436 for me. For me the Add-Ons were already set to on, so what I did was:

- Turn off add-ons under Settings > Startup / Shutdown / Manage Add-Ons
- Quit Steam VR
- Start Steam VR
- Turn on add-ons

And suddenly my Index started responding again. Thanks a bunch OP!!

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
