Motion is delayed, or continued when I'm not holding down wasd (when playing games such as Destiny 2 and Portal 2)

When I press wasd keys, the character won't begin moving straight away and/or it continues to move when I'm not holding down those keys. I can move the mouse and change direction but sometimes I can't stop moving. This happens particularly on Portal 2 coop and Destiny 2. It makes the games unplayable to me as I have little control over movement. Is there any way to resolve this issue?
