Would you recommend a g-sync monitor?
Last September, I built a new computer to replace my 10 year old GTX 970 Build with a 2070 Super. Because the new build is capable of running most games at a higher frame rate in 1440p, I also purchased a budget monitor on a black Friday sale. The monitor is 1440p at 144hz, but no g-sync. I didn't know at the time what would happen if I moved past 60 FPS at the higher resolution.

Gaming has been somewhat... unpleasant. Actually, it has almost felt like a bit of a downgrade to be honest. When I play very demanding games like Red Dead 2, sometimes the frame rate can fall to say, 55 FPS for brief moments. This is incredibly jarring as the image quality becomes quite um... Jerky? However, most of my games will run between 70-90 FPS. Of course, I'd like to play at the higher frame rates, but when there is a range, something just doesn't look right.

I've been looking around, but there's different information and I don't know what to think. Basically, I'm wondering if gsync would help smooth out my image quality during dips under 60 FPS, and when there's a range in FPS at the higher end of the spectrum? Of course, my monitor is 144hz, and my games aren't reaching that, so i suspect that's part of the problem too.

Any sort of advise would be appreciated.

No monitors have V-Sync. V-Sync is software controlled by the GPU. It syncs itself to the refresh rate of a monitor. So ALL monitors can utilise V-Sync. Just turn it on in games video/graphics settings.

EDIT: and using V-Sync will cap fps to the max refresh rate of your monitor. If fps drops below so will V-Sync. V-Sync also adds a little input latency. Not a big issue for non competitive games.

Ah... Right you are. I'm a dummy. I'm actually asking about g-sync. Editing accordingly.

Yeah, would recommend getting a Gsync compatible display. Do remember some FreeSync monitors also work with Gsync. https://www.windowscentral.com/list-all-nvidia-g-sync-compatible-freesync-monitors

G-Sync can certainly boost performance but if a game is unoptimised then you still may notice issues. Sometimes you may have to take the hit and lower some in-game settings and make use of the AA options available.

EDIT misread OT OP has a GTX 970 and I believe G-Sync compatible only works for series 10 and higher....unless they changed it. So if you're going to go for G-Sync make sure it's an actual G-Sync display with the hardware inside so it'll work with your GPU. If Nviida did add support to series 9 GPUs

List of G-Sync compatible monitors here

And yes OP having G-Sync is recommended. It does make things a lot nicer with fluctuating fps. Can be a little iffy on some games but on the whole it's much better. Rather have it and turn it off/lower settings for a few games that not have it available for majority of others.

OP now has a 2070 super.

Opps. My bad. I skimmed it and saw 970 and didn't read the rest this time. Edited

ok
Hi guys, I'm just popping back in to thank you all for your thoughts. I'm going to go ahead and grab a new monitor. I think it will be an LG 27GL83A-B.
