Is <1MB/sec download speed normal?
Just as the question says really.... i've never had more than 1 MB/sec download speed. Currently trying to download Fallout 4 and i'm averaging about 700-800kb/sec. This is normal for me.

I have Sky BroadBand (unlimited) an MSI agming laptop (pretty decent specs) I live in a big city and usually have no problems with internet connections - can stream Netflix and pretty much anything, most of what I watch on TV is streamed over the net. I work from home regularly and have no problems using my home broadband connection for work (live meetings, telecons, etc)

Basically, everything is usually fine with my internet speed and laptop specs but for Steam its just intolerable. Have tried changing my server location and unthrottling, etc but makes no difference.

Just wondering if my experience is normal in the UK?

Thanks

Look at your internet bill to see what speeds you are supposed to be getting, and run a test at:

Speedtest.net

Netflix usually doesn't require a whole lot of bandwidth, so that is not a good comparison to make for download speed.

Tried connecting laptop to router directly with an ethernet cable (as recommended in the link that Washell posted) which marginally increased speed (from about 800kb/s to about 1MB/s) so some good news, but still hardly lightning!

Speedtest says I have a download test speed of 8.36MB/s

Are you using a wireless connection? This can result in lower speeds than with a wired connection depending on where your laptop is. Try moving it to another location, or using an ethernet cable to connect to your router. This should make the most of a poor connection.

Those speeds seem about average for a non-fibre connection: they are fine for streaming HD video, but can result in long download times for games.

thanks Alex... yes its connected via ethernet cable now and speed has improved a little.... getting a consistent 1MB/sec now.

Sounds like I might just have to leave it going overnight....

Thanks for the advice all

Speedtest shows results in MegaBIT per second. 8.36 Mb/s would be around 900kb/s - 1 MB/s. Which is what you get on Steam. So that would be normal.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
