Is it possible to downgrade to an earlier version of steam?
I use Ubuntu 16.04 and I'm running Steam in Wine. It worked fine until Steam updated yesterday. Then it started crashing Play on Linux. I updated Wine and opened Steam by right-clicking on Steam.exe and selecting open in wine. Steam games work now but the store and community within the program are broken (I'm using Chrome to post this now). Also, more importantly, 2 of my games (The Fruit of Grisaia and Steins;Gate) don't feel like working anymore. Steins;Gate throws up an error message when I try to start it (http://imgur.com/a/giddx.png) and The Fruit of Grisaia now shows boxes instead of texts (http://i.imgur.com/oKARuzh.png ). Any help would be appreciated.

Not while going online, no. As soon as Steam starts it connects to its servers and searches for updates. Those are automatically installed before Steam starts.
You could theoretically stay on an old version if you dont go online again and stay in in offline mode.
But thats about it.

The option to downgrade to a previous Steam version would be highly problematic if an exploit was discovered in the Steam Client. For this reason the option to downgrade will most likely never be implemented.

The actual release version is already the "Stable" one. That doesn't mean it's ever going to be bug free.
And the versions being replaced are because they have errors to get rid of.

well the latest version is very slow (takes 30 seconds to register a click) and I have tried every bugfix down to installing steam on the same drive as my library yet the last version worked fine so the "stable" branch is sometimes unstable and a 1-2 version downgrade with some versions not allowed is clearly needed and no I am running literally every other windows program stable and windows 10 makes things worse as it can't even be idle for 2 hours before bsod'ing/hard lockups

ryzen 7 1700

16gb ddr4-2166 gskill ageis (i think if it is a ram problem I can verify this)

msi b350 pc mate (latest windows 7 compatible bios latest chipset drivers)

gigabyte aorus rx550 2gb (latest stable drivers by testing not amd recomendations)

relevant is process never uses more than 5% cpu and the cpu is not at 100%

I/O is not peaking on the drive (=>1mb/s on a drive capable of 100+)

no pagefaulting or low ram problems

edit: forgot to mention even deleted leftover files in appdata/others after uninstalls and cleaned up non game files in library folder prior to repairing the folder via steam

it seems steam breaks as soon as I try to install or re-add ANY games in my library but the games run fine

not running linux running windows 7 x64
just saw the "allowing downgrading from any labled "stable" version would be a bad idea" post

I am seeking the same answer of this question. Latest Steam Client (API v018, Package: 1541710380) is extremely buggy. Can't we just download an earlier package and just run like a portable app? Why does Valve do this torture? Old version was very stable and even we cannot login to Discussions/Profile sections without any trouble.
