[FIXED] Steam is having trouble connecting to the Steam servers
Since 7/12 I have been unable to connect to the Steam Client. I get "Steam is having trouble connecting to the Steam servers". I can login to the Web Page and the mobile app just fine.

I have done the following:

  • added -tcp to the shortcut
  • Deleted Appcache
  • done netsh winsock reset
  • Restarted in safe mode with networking
  • bypassed my router
  • uninstalled firewall and antivirus software (was using Avira)
  • uninstalled and reinstalled Steam Client (now I can't get into Offline mode either, thank you very much!)
  • changed my DNS thinking that MIGHT help....nope.

The steam client updates, downloads the update, but when I put in my login and password, I get the error. Because it updates, I assume it's connecting to SOMETHING.

EDIT: SO apparently the latest update caused an issue with Windows Firewall. I used to have to use -tcp in the shortcut to connect. So this was a combination of 2 issues.

    1) Deleted all rules for Steam in Windows Firewall and manually added an exception for ALL exe files in the Steam folder and subfolders.

    2) removed the -tcp from the shortcut.

This seems to have worked, although is a pain that I had to reconfigure everything for seemingly no reason. Thanks, Valve. </snark>

EDIT: I just learned about the netsh winsock reset and it fixed my issue actually.

I am having the same issue! I even wiped my entire PC after I got frustrated. It all started yesterday when I got home from work. Nothing seemed amiss except for Steam. I uninstalled and disabled any type of antivirus I had, tried the firewall, etc. Nothing helped so I wiped the PC.

Just did a fresh install(Windows 7) and got everything updated. Getting real excited to finally play some PUBG again so I download steam, install it aaaaand...F.M.L... Same message.

So what the heck is wrong with it now? Why is this happening? I can connect to Steam on my laptop. My desktop is about 6 years old but it is still a decent powerhouse. Nothing would justify this.

All windows updates are freshly installed, nvidia is freshly updated now. The only protective program I have is Avira which I have used for years.

So what now could possibly cause it lol? My brothers PC works fine with steam. My laptop works fine. But my desktop seems dead. But just with Steam...

UPDATE!!!!

Ok, so it appears for some reason Windows Firewall is blocking my Steam connection, even though every exe in the steam folders are set as an exception in my firewall for both TCP and UDP. Not sure what to do on this one. I turn off Windows Firewall and it works again. I turn it back on, and nothing. So what changed in the last update that caused Windows Firewall to block it even as an exception?

Just go to the folder where you installed steam and run steam from there rather than the shortcut and run it as admin.....Fixed it for me

Reviving this topic, as I have tried everything possible and I made a post on it and not many people helped.
