Can't rebind xbox controller buttons
I recently installed my xbox controller for the first time and messed up the key binding for the B button. Now it has no binding. However, I cannot go and edit the button bindings as Steam has saved the initial bindings into a file and associated them with my account so when I click on the controller then my name and deregister account, I get a popup saying that a guest controller is being used then straight away it goes back to the initial key configuration I made with no B button associated with anything.

I went into the steam config.vdf file and edited the keys by hand. I can see the b button is unassigned and looks likely to be 'b1' but the file was re-written when Steam launches and reverts back to no B button binding.

Controller,a:b0,b:,y:b3,x:b2

Can anyone help here as I'm so tantalisingly close to having a gamepad.

Thanks, Jack.

Wow you're so helpful.

Have you tried using a different controller or a different USB cable?

I know right. MonsterYTB where are you coming from?

I don't have another controller and yes I tried the other port.

The driver in System Preferences shows it's working fine so it is a Steam software problem.

The controller setup system is broken.

That's probably a reason why valve wanted to make their own controller so they can ignore the third party controller issue. That's just my theory.

So even if you edit the controller config file by hand (you rebel), it reverts the moment you start up Steam?
Hmm...
Which file did you attempt to edit? I play with a Playstation4 controller and I first have to pick if i want to set controls for big picture mode, the windows desktop or a game. Then, with each 'mode' I can either go through my locally saved personal config files (if I made those), browse through community uploaded configs, or pick from standard templates that vary from 'standard gamepad' (or something like that) to "WASD and mouse emulation" (or again... something like that).

If I'm perfectly honest, I would just deïnstall Steam, make sure any traces of controller config files are deleted, and reïnstall steam. Save yourself the hassle of getting everything back to normal manually.

Also, quick question: what generation of Xbox controller are we talking about here? Because if it is 360 or newer and you are using windows 7 or up, you don't even need Steam to use your controller. If a game has full controller support, it will find your controller automagically!

Having the same issue since their last upbreak. Nothing is working so far.

It's a Madcatz Xbox (original) controller on Mac El Capitain.

Very annoying. Basically I made a complete mess of pressing the right buttons on my first attempt to set it up.

I suspect if I re-install Steam it will retain the association of the gamepad with my profile where the button bindings have been saved.

Given there is no option to rebind the keys and the association with this game pad, there is now no way to correct the B button to be bound to 'b1'.

Thanks for your help guys. I can still play emulators and none-Steam games but Steam is less compatible the Kega Fusion it seems (which has no probs).

Maybe a future update will fix this but for now, the controller setup is nicht so gut and I won't be able to use the gamepad.

Steam, why you so half arsed?
