Unfortunately, the TCP/IP reset thing didn't work for me, I had seen that and tried. Also there's lots of things in that thread indeed, and I've tried most, and some would just not be relevant anyway, logically. But I do appreciate your headsup a lot! thanks!!
It's no joy yet.. I hope if this is a bad update or patch that it's going to be set right quickly, because reading that other topic, one that is years old might I add, it seems that folks have been dealing with it on and off for a long time, and for long periods át a time.
If it's not something that I have done wrong, which looks to be the case, then it's quite unacceptable that all my games, that I paid good money for, are just not accessible. I'd open a ticket but I fear I'd only get a standardized answer pointing me to the things that I've already tried without succes, after which they simply don't know either and fall silent.. as my experience taught me. :(
Steam, give me back my access to my games please! ;)
If I go to the support section, it'll have all the categories, so I pick steam client, and then the server login problems option, and well, you get a little bit of info and the troubleshooting, all of which I've looked at, done and failed.
And then you have 3 more options; documentation, community help (right here), and the 'help me with my issue' button ...wasn't that last one supposed to be the button to get proper help from one of their own tech support employees?
Well.. now when I click that, it just goes back to the main support page, in effect just being a looping self-help solution with no means to get in touch with a proper tech support representative, or so it seems, I might be wrong.
Am I missing something, or is this just the new and improved 'just figure it out yourself' method of supplying us with the help we deserve for being loyal customers?
I know there's a kazillion problems to be solved for almost anything steam and steam games related, by browsing the various forums, but been there, done that, and some things I am perhaps not comfortable with and would like a professional's opinion on. (though I take my hat off to all the people here, many of which very professional, that provide people with answers, no disrespect intended.)
I'd like someone that actually has to do with the product that is apparently now faulty, to take the time and try to help me out here, if you know what I mean. :)
first of all, figure out if it is your connection of your PC.
Try a different PC on the same connection. (ask a friend to to bring his laptop for example)
Try the same PC on a different connection. (easy if you have a laptop, and if you don't try to use a 3g thing on your smartphone if you can)
Just trying this will save you time if you can connect using these two things.
1) Press Win key (the one with a Windows logo) on your keyboard, and type “cmd“. Right click Command Prompt in the result and select Run as administrator.
2) Type the following lines of command and press Enter on your keyboard after typing each line.
1. ipconfig /release
2. ipconfig /all
3. ipconfig /flushdns
4. ipconfig /renew
5. netsh int ip set dns
6. netsh winsock reset
3) After you enter all 6 commands reboot your computer and launch your Steam client. Check and see if the problem resolved.
I did #5 and #6 according to the OP's link (and your suggestion by extension). It didn't work for me, but for some reason I ran the .exe with admin (right click "run as admin" from the install dir) and it loaded. I tried it again without admin and it's still working. Dafuq? Some weird little quirk I guess. The good thing is that it works now. Sweet. Thanks guys.
EDIT: I should also mention that I didn't try running it in admin in the first place. Probably should've tried that first but oh well.
EDIT PART DEUX: It happened again, but elevating to admin fixed it. I've adjusted the .exe to open as admin every time now. (.exe properties --> compatibility tab --> run as admin)
