Steam update made 42 of 45GB disapear? any ideas to recover?
using Hotspot at 15GB a month for last 3 months to Download MHW while stuck on mountain helping family. last night new billing month rolled over and started finishing it, at 42.1GB high speed hotspot ran out, so i paused download and went to sleep. next morning steam had udated itself, and when I restarted download, it was all missing, did 42 GB of almost finished game disapear? is there a way to recover it?

That happens if a game has a patch/update when you are downloading and pause the download.
When you restart it Steam will check the server status of the files, see that there are newer ones, delete the old files and start from the beginning.
The only way to avoid this is to not pause the download for whatever reason.
Or be VERY sure the game wont have a update in that time.
With a multiplayer focused game like Monster Hunter a terrible idea. Those get patches very regularly.

I can only recommend downloading the whole game at a friend or internet cafe or any place that has no monthly cap.

Edit: Ah i just saw that you are stuck with that internet at a certain location. No clue then, sorry.

I am extremely sad. thanks for the response/ with quarantine, I cant leave, and ive bought a $35 data boost for an extra 5GB just to finally finish this download, that I apparently cant even do. Ive spent $100 on a game that steam wont even let me play because it wants to delete 3 months of all my progress, just before I finish it. 10/10

That sucks indeed. I can actually relate a bit, till a few years ago i only had Hotspot internet over my phone for a year or so. With a 10 GB monthly data cap.
That sucked like nothing else for gaming.

The only upside is that the game is forever in your library and some day you will have access to better internet again. No a big plus at the moment but at least something.
