Memory overflow caused by steam client, any idea how to fix it?
Each time I launch the steam client, the process "steam client webhelper" quickly starts to eat up all the free memory spaces in just several seconds - and this quickly triggers a crash of the whole Windows and my computer goes the blue screen.

I just can't imagine why the hell this damn process could be capable to consume 12GB of memory within a minute!!

I've tried reinstalling steam, update the windows itself, and restart. Nothing worked. Nothing! Only deleting the webhelper executable brought me some peace back for a while at yesterday night, but this didn't last long - the catastrophe comes back when I woke up this morning.

Does anyone of you guys know further solutions? Please help!! Thanks in advance!!

I am now using a razer blade 15 advanced, the model with i7 8750H and GTX 1060. My Windows is now version 18363.720, and the version code is 1909.

Steam uses 274.7mb on my system.

Problem on your end?

Have you done any memory or hardware tests?

This guide may help solve the blue screen problem.

Thank you so much for your reply!

Every other thing than steam works just fine on my computer. I also completed CHKDSK and nothing wrong popped up.

I tried to install steam on another computer of mine, and on that one, the steam client operates just fine. So I guess there should also be something wrong with my end.

However, somehow interestingly, another guy in the forum (https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/2155476542889540573/) encountered exactly the same problem as mine. So I guess there must be something wrong at Steam's end too.

Your welcome.

Are you on the Steam Client Beta? I am, no issues.

I have 32gb ram and no issues (link you posted).

It is may be a local issue on the users end rather than Steam although if more and more reports come in then it may be a Steam issue also.

So maybe this IS mostly something at my end, and the only way out for me to get rid of this nightmare is to reinstall Windows and everything else?? Oh no, jeez.......

Yeah, I agree, the current number of reports is yet insufficient to claim if there's anything wrong with steam.

Nevertheless, I've set the -no-browser starting parameters to the start menu shortcut, and now I could get access to my games without this damn webhelper process messing around. I also started a support case and hopefully I could get some useful help days after.

No sure if you are going to follow the guide I linked but try this first:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system

If that does not help follow the advice on the original link posted below:

I've tried the Microsoft link and it didn't help. I am trying the webnots guide now. It's gonna take time and if anything interesting pops up, I'll post the updates here.

Thanks again for your kind help!

I'm having the exact same issue. My system has 32GB RAM, and steamwebhelper.exe climbs to over 20GB. The Steam interface never loads. I have already disabled GPU rendering for web views. This only started happening after the March 26 2020 update.

Clearly that's a memory leak, if app using 20GB of RAM.

I suggest either switch to Steam beta, if already in it, opt out instead, then check if issue resolved.
If it didn't work then try reinstalling Steam, to keep games, and screenshots, head to where you install Steam, move these two folders, "Steamapp" and "Userdata" move these two folders outside the Steam folder, once done that, uninstall Steam, ensure Steam folders gone, if not delete it, then reinstall Steam, run it to download client, don't login just exit out of Steam, move back the "Steamapp" and "Userdata" folder back into Steam folder, if ask if want to replace click yes, and now launch Steam, and test to see if issue resolved.

I am having the very same issue on Linux since the March 26th update. I have already contacted Steam support and started a thread, since I had not found yours.

Well well, seems that I am not alone at last. I started a support case, not an open thread, so this is probably the reason why you didn't see mine. Let's wait and see what Steam would do.

Honestly, if simply piling up the memory capacity of my computer to 32GB could solve this problem, hell, I might seriously think about ordering new memory parts :steamfacepalm:

I contacted Steam support on Friday as well, but their response time is getting long these days.

I'm facing the same problem

Ok ran a memory diagnostic on my PC. it didn't find any issues

I use my PC for work every day and everything else is working fine. Hearing that other people have this issue is a big bowl of relief as I'm sure it's a steam problem and my hardware
