Lan Party
Hello, I am looking for some help. I hope I am posting in the right place. I want to have a lan party with my kids, we are stuck in the house like most other people. We each have a laptop (there are 4 of us) and we want to do a local co-op. My question is how do I set that up? I have a router each of us having ethernet cords and our own ip addresses. But after trying to find a game (which maybe someone could recommend) do I need to download steam on each pc, and do we sign in with one account or separate accounts? If signing in with separate accounts, do I need to purchase the game four times, a copy for each of us? I did some searching on Google for this but didn't find a definitive guide for these questions. Appreciate any advice!

TL;DR
Need help for lan steam/game settings.

which game do you guys are trying to play? Every game has different settings

Just off as a very general thing, you need to log into different steam accounts. So 5 accounts in total and need the game to added in all those accounts seperately. So if its paid, you'll have to buy the game in each and every account. So unfortunately purchasing the game 5 times.

Some games however have "shared coop/Spitscreen coop" in which two players play on the same pc

I'm thinking rocket league. Found some guides on setup, plus my son the alpha gamer has not played it yet, so it should even the playing field (I hope lol) thanks for the general setup advice.

So yes, you will need to buy rocket league in each and every account and download the game on every laptop or console device.
I myself havent played rocket league, but i did a little digging and to my understanding, there should be an option for "local match" or a "private match" in the play menu somewhere.
Once you have setup the match on any one of the devices, you can connect to the server from the other devices

I appologize for the lack of information i possess in this game. I'm more of a csgo guy myself. Hopefully someone from RL background will soon reply in this thread soon

"Local coop" in this case means that it can be played by multiple people from the same pc. Like a splitscreen game, for example. LAN would technically be considered an online game.

Some games don't have local multiplayer, so the only way to play them together is online. Each of you would need a Steam account and a copy of the game on their account, that means you'd have to buy the game for each account. You can then add your kids' accounts as friends and invite them to your game.

If the game does have local coop, the easiest way to play together would be by playing all on the same PC. Although for that you'd need multiple controllers. It would also be more comfortable if you can hook up that laptop to a bigger monitor/TV so you can all see better.

There's also Steam Remote Play, which allows you to play local coop games online. I haven't tried it yet so I don't know how good it is. You'd basically be streaming the game to whoever else is playing with you, and they'd be playing from their computers, without having to buy the game themselves. However, you'd still need controllers for that, as I don't believe it detects separate keyboards. More info here: https://store.steampowered.com/remoteplay

Rocket League does have splitscreen multiplayer, so the 4 of you could play on the same PC and not have to buy 4 copies of the game, if that's what you prefer.
Remember that you can see if a game has local multiplayer/online multiplayer in the game's store page.

If you want some more game suggestions, I might be able to think of a few good ones.

I created the accounts for everyone and purchased RL. Now I'm waiting on the downloads, 40GB combined. Thankfully RL is 50% off right now. We were watching some tutorials and it looks like it should be a good fit for us. I'll let everyone know how the LAN portion goes after setup tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who took time out and gave us input. Gn

Lan settings were a breeze, easy peasy, once you're in the game. Create local match, invite, accept, and done. Nice.....

That's great to hear. Y'all stay safe.

One last thing I wanted to add to this post. The local game LAN portion didn't work until everyone disabled all network adapters except the ethernet lan. It was only then it found the other PC's. Thanks again
